Wassily™ Chair: 31"W × 27"D × 28.75"H; seat height 16.5"; seat depth 16.5"; arm height 23". Weight: 25 lb (11.3 kg). Comes fully assembled.
The Wassily Chair's seat, back, and both armrests are formed by leather strips stretched taut across the tubular steel frame — not padded cushions. The slings are held in tension by the frame and by the sitter's weight. They provide a firm, flat seating surface and will maintain their crisp tautness for decades. Three leather grades are available: Spinneybeck Belting Leather (27 colourways), Spinneybeck Thick Cowhide (black, light brown, white beige), and Spinneybeck Haired Hide (natural markings, multiple colourways). Every authentic Knoll Wassily Chair is stamped in the base of the frame with three marks: the KnollStudio logo, Marcel Breuer's signature, and an individual identification number unique to that specific chair. All three must be present. If the chair does not carry all three marks, it is not an authentic Knoll product.
The Wassily Chair provides a distinctive, immersive sitting experience that is different from conventionally padded lounge chairs. The leather slings are taut and firm — the seat is not cushioned. At 16.5"H the sitting position is low and settled. The chair is intended for reading, conversation, or contemplative use — not for upright desk or task seating. Many people find it extremely comfortable; the taut leather gives enough to the body without the enveloping softness of foam-cushioned chairs.
Belting Leather (Spinneybeck) is a vegetable-tanned, aniline- dyed premium leather originally developed for industrial machinery belts; tight grain, light finish coat, edges dyed to match — it is the most colour-varied option. Thick Cowhide is a premium cowhide with a smooth, dense surface, available in three neutral colours. Haired Hide is natural cowhide with visible natural markings — every sling is unique; it is the most material-led and expressive option. Contact our team to discuss and request samples.
Yes — the Wassily Chair Canvas (listed separately) has the same tubular steel frame and the same dimensions, but with natural cotton canvas slings in place of leather. The Gold version has the same dimensions with an 18K gold-plated frame. All three are the same chair.
