Saarinen designed the Womb Chair in 1948 after Florence Knoll requested a chair she could truly curl up in. Rather than relying on excessive padding, Saarinen developed a carefully proportioned molded fiberglass shell that provides comfort through shape itself. The chair supports multiple sitting positions naturally — upright, reclined, sideways, or curled inward.

At 40" wide and 34" deep, the Womb Chair is generous without becoming oversized. The relatively low 16" seat height contributes to the feeling of enclosure and relaxation. Beneath the organic shell, the tubular steel base remains visually light and direct, allowing the sculptural form above to dominate.

Eero Saarinen was among the defining designers of the post-war modernist era. His work for Knoll includes the Womb Chair, Tulip Chair, and Pedestal Collection, while his architecture includes the Gateway Arch, TWA Flight Center, and Washington Dulles International Airport. Knoll is part of the MillerKnoll collective.

Care Instructions

Fabric upholstery

Blot spills immediately. Use only mild pH-neutral upholstery cleaners applied with a soft cloth. Avoid saturation and prolonged direct sunlight.

Leather upholstery

Clean with a dry or lightly damp cloth. Use dedicated leather cleaners when required and condition periodically.

Fiberglass shell

If exposed, wipe with a damp cloth and mild soap. No routine maintenance otherwise required.

Chrome steel base

Clean with a soft damp cloth and dry immediately. Avoid abrasive pads and standing moisture.

Black powder coat base

Wipe with a microfiber cloth and mild soap solution. Do not use solvent-based cleaners.

Saarinen разработал Womb Chair в 1948 году после просьбы Florence Knoll создать кресло, в котором можно было бы по-настоящему расслабиться. Вместо чрезмерного слоя мягкого наполнителя он создал тщательно выверенную fiberglass shell, где именно форма отвечает за ощущение комфорта.
