Ergonomics: designed around bodies, not averages

Herman Miller Aeron: the size-flexible classic

The Aeron replaced a conventional upholstered seat-and-back approach with breathable suspension. Herman Miller's own history of the chair explains how its designers were looking for support that allowed the body to move rather than simply sitting against a cushion (Machines for Sitting). Today, Aeron remains the clearest option in the range when breathability and size choice are central to the brief.

• Choose it for: shared or warm offices, people with different body shapes, and buyers who want a proven ergonomic platform with a clear size framework.

Herman Miller Embody: built for long, focused sitting

Embody's back uses a matrix of “pixels” that moves with micro-movements to spread support. BackFit lets the sitter tune the back to the curve of the spine, while the seat and arms provide several adjustment points (Aeron vs Embody).

• Choose it for: long, focused seated work and people who prefer cushioning plus fine back adjustment.
• Think twice if: you are specifying one chair for a very mixed team without a fitting session. Embody uses adjustments rather than multiple size shells to fit different users.

Herman Miller Mirra 2: the flexible all-rounder

Mirra 2 offers two back styles: Butterfly Back, a suspension membrane that flexes with movement, or TriFlex, a perforated polymer back designed for durability and easy cleaning. Lumbar height and depth, seat depth, seat angle, arms and tilt can be adjusted, which makes it useful when different people will share the same workstation (Mirra 2 product page).

Herman Miller Cosm: comfort without the controls

Cosm removes much of the manual setup. Auto-Harmonic Tilt responds to body weight and movement, while the flexible frame and Intercept suspension do the work. It comes in three sizes and several arm styles (Cosm product page).

• Choose it for: busy teams, shared spaces and people who never use the levers on their current chair.
• Think twice if: you like to fine-tune. Fewer manual adjustments mean the initial size and fit matter more.

1. How different are the bodies? Aeron and Cosm offer size frameworks, while Embody and Mirra 2 rely more on adjustment.

3. Is the chair assigned or shared? Shared and hot desks favour chairs that are easy to use or forgiving across users.

When can you get it? Plan for about 70 days

This timing is the same practical logic as our 16-week office relocation plan, which works backwards from move-in and treats furniture lead times as part of the critical path.

What it really costs: look beyond the price

Price still matters, but it is only one line in the total-cost picture. Warranty length, fit, expected use, replacement risk, servicing and lost time all matter when a chair is used five days a week. A useful comparison is to divide current purchase price by the warranty period and by an assumed number of working days — as an illustration, not as a promise of service life.

The live Office Design product pages should be used for current prices immediately before publication. As of the September 2026 strategy, the draft used Aeron Mineral at 1,009,990 ₸ and Embody at 969,990 ₸, but the current pages now show different prices. Do not publish the old figures without reconfirming them.

Herman Miller says that buying through an authorized reseller provides two important protections: confidence that the product is authentic and access to warranty support.
