The Womb Settee was developed by Eero Saarinen in 1948 for his architectural commission at the General Motors Technical Center — a 25-building complex requiring furniture for thousands of employees. Saarinen created a slim, sculptural two-seat settee unlike the heavy lounge seating of the era, writing, “Now, more than ever, we need to relax.” The Womb Settee went out of production before being reintroduced by Knoll in 2015, bringing the double-wide Womb form back after decades. It measures 62.75"W × 34"D × 35.5"H with a 16" seat height and 20.5" arm height, features a moulded fiberglass shell and tubular steel base in polished chrome or black, and is available in a wide range of KnollTextiles and Spinneybeck upholstery options. GREENGUARD Indoor Air Quality certified. Made in the USA.

The Womb Settee went out of production for decades before Knoll reintroduced it in 2015. The structural flexibility challenge of the wider fiberglass shell was resolved through updated manufacturing techniques, while Saarinen’s original 1948 design remained unchanged.

At 62.75" wide, the settee is generous enough for two people to sit comfortably with full personal space, while preserving the enveloping comfort that defines the Womb Chair. The same moulded fiberglass shell logic scales naturally into a two-person lounge form.

Care Instructions

Fabric upholstery

Blot spills immediately. Use a mild pH-neutral fabric cleaner with a soft cloth. Avoid saturation and prolonged direct sunlight.

Leather upholstery

Clean with a soft dry or slightly damp cloth. Use dedicated leather cleaners and condition periodically.

Fiberglass shell

Wipe exposed fiberglass with a damp cloth and mild soap when required.

Tubular steel base

Clean with a slightly damp microfiber cloth. Avoid abrasive pads and solvent-based cleaners.

Glides

Check articulating glides periodically for wear and replace when necessary.

62.75"W × 34"D × 35.5"H; seat height 16"; arm height 20.5" (159.4 × 86.4 × 90.2 cm). These are identical to the Womb Chair in depth, height, seat height, and arm height — the settee is a double-wide extension of the same shell form.

The original 1948 Settee faced a production challenge: the fiberglass shell at the wider span required for two seats was more flexible than ideal for heavy contract use, making quality control difficult. The design went out of production. Knoll reintroduced it in 2015 after resolving the shell manufacturing challenge through updated techniques. The design itself was unchanged.

Two people comfortably with full personal space. The shell form is deep enough (34"D) that two people can sit in it side by side without feeling crowded — or one person can occupy one end entirely.

No — there is no Settee-specific ottoman in the Womb Collection. The Womb™ Ottoman (25.5"W × 20"D × 16"H) is designed as a companion to the Womb Chair and can be used alongside the Settee as a footrest, but it is not the same scale relationship as the Chair-and-Ottoman pairing.
