In 1962, Warren Platner approached Knoll with an idea difficult enough that it took four years to bring to production: a table built entirely from welded steel wire rods, precisely aligned so the bent steel was simultaneously structurally sound and visually graceful. The Platner Coffee Table, 36" is the compact expression of that idea — a circular table measuring 36" in diameter and 15¼"H, its wire base built from vertical rods welded to circular horizontal and edge-framing rods, exactly as in every other piece in the collection.

At 36" in diameter, the Coffee Table is the more intimate of the two Platner coffee table sizes — scaled for a smaller seating group or a room where the 42" version would feel oversized. Every element of the collection's manufacturing philosophy is present at this scale: the same welded steel wire rod base, requiring the same painstaking alignment of curved rod to circular frame that Platner spent four years perfecting before the collection's 1966 debut. The range of top materials available on the Coffee Table — five marble stones in both polished and satin coated finishes, natural marble, natural granite, wood veneer, and both clear and bronze glass — is the widest in the entire Platner Collection, since the larger 60" and 70" Dining Tables are restricted to clear glass alone. This gives the Coffee Table considerably more material flexibility: a warm wood veneer top for a residential living room, a bold Nero Marquina marble for a more dramatic reading, or the classic clear glass that lets the wire base's structure remain fully visible from above. The 18k gold base, introduced in 2015 for the Platner Collection's 50th anniversary, is available on this size — a celebratory finish for clients who want the table to function as a genuine statement object.

✦ Designed by Warren Platner, 1966

Warren Platner (1919–2006) was born in Baltimore and graduated from Cornell University's School of Architecture in 1941. From 1945 to 1950 he worked for Raymond Loewy and I. M. Pei; from 1960 to 1965 he was part of Eero Saarinen's office, contributing to major projects including Dulles International Airport. In 1967 he founded his own practice, Platner Associates, in Connecticut. As an architect in his own right, Platner designed the Georg Jensen Design Center and the celebrated Windows on the World restaurant atop the World Trade Center, both in New York City — but it was his 1966 furniture collection for Knoll that earned him worldwide renown. Reflecting on his design philosophy, Platner said: "I began to think about what I thought furniture, specifically a chair, really might be, starting with the philosophy that it isn't going to be aggressively technological, or aggressively handicraft." Knoll is part of the MillerKnoll collective.

Care Instructions

Welded Steel Wire Base (Polished Nickel): Wipe with a clean, slightly damp soft cloth for routine maintenance. For minor marks, a mild soap solution on a soft cloth is safe—dry immediately and completely. Do not use abrasive pads, scouring products, or solvent-based cleaners, which will permanently damage the clear lacquer coating and the underlying plating. Because the base is an open radial lattice, dust can accumulate at the weld intersections; a soft brush or compressed air is effective for routine dusting.

Welded Steel Wire Base (Metallic Bronze or 18k Gold): Metallic bronze surfaces should be wiped clean with a damp soft cloth and mild soap if needed; avoid all abrasive materials. For the 18k gold finish, wipe with a very lightly damp microfibre cloth only—never use abrasive pads, metal polishes, or solvent-based cleaners, which will permanently degrade the lacquer coat and the fine gold plating underneath.

Clear or Bronze Tempered Glass Top: Clean using a soft cloth combined with standard glass cleaner. Do not use abrasive scrubbing pads. Take careful precautions against edge impacts to avoid chips.

Coated Marble Top: Wipe with a damp cloth; a mild soap solution is perfectly safe. Avoid all acid-based cleaners (such as vinegar or citrus products), which will compromise the protective polyester layer. This coating may yellow slightly over time as an inherent natural characteristic. Strictly intended for indoor use.

Natural Marble or Granite Top: Uncoated natural stones are porous and highly susceptible to staining or etching from acidic substances. Wipe any accidental spills immediately. Clean using only specialized formulas specified for natural stone care. Contact our team for specific sealing and maintenance guidance.

Wood Veneer Top: Wipe with a slightly damp soft cloth. A mild soap solution may be used for marks—dry the surface immediately. Do not use solvent-based products.

Золото 18 карат: протирайте исключительно очень слегка влажной салфеткой из микрофибры — категорически запрещены абразивные губки, полироли для металла или очистители на основе растворителей, которые могут повредить как лаковый слой, так и деликатное золотое напыление под ним.

Столешница из прозрачного или бронзового закаленного стекла: Протирайте мягкой салфеткой с использованием стандартных бытовых очистителей для стекол. Не используйте абразивные подушечки. Будьте аккуратны при размещении на столе твердых предметов — сильные удары по кромке могут привести к сколам.

Мраморная столешница с защитным покрытием: Протирайте влажной тканью, допускается слабый мыльный раствор. Не используйте очистители на кислотной основе (уксус, лимонный сок), которые могут повредить полиэфирное покрытие. Со временем покрытие может слегка пожелтеть — это естественное свойство материала. Не использовать на открытом воздухе.

Натуральный мрамор или гранит: Пористые материалы, чувствительные к окрашиванию и травлению от кислотных веществ. Немедленно удаляйте любые пролитые жидкости.
