Eero Saarinen vowed to address the "ugly, confusing, unrestful world" he observed underneath chairs and tables — the so-called "slum of legs." A five-year design investigation led him to the revolutionary Pedestal Collection, and the Tulip Armless Chair is its most compact and essential piece: a single moulded fiberglass shell forming both seat and back without arms, set on a single cast-aluminium pedestal base in White or Black Rilsan® paint, measuring 20"W × 21.25"D × 32"H with an 18.5" seat height. It is the definitive dining chair of the Pedestal Collection — the piece Saarinen designed to sit four, six, or eight around the Saarinen round or oval table, and the piece that makes any dining room into a complete Pedestal Collection interior. The Tulip Armless Chair is the simplest object in the Pedestal Collection, and possibly the most important. Without arms, the chair visually recedes — allowing the Saarinen table to lead the composition. Four or six Tulip Armless Chairs around a white Saarinen round table create one of the purest furniture arrangements of the twentieth century: every element reduced to a single stem rising from the floor.

At 20" wide, the molded fiberglass shell is compact enough to seat six comfortably around a 47" round table without crowding — something most conventional dining chairs cannot achieve because of their leg geometry. At 18.5" seat height, the chair works naturally with standard dining and café table heights. With the swivel base option, it becomes a fully capable meeting chair.

Saarinen developed the Pedestal Collection through years of sketches, scale models, and full-size clay studies. His goal was to eliminate what he described as the “slum of legs” beneath conventional tables and chairs. The Tulip Chair remains one of the defining works of twentieth-century industrial design and is part of the permanent design language of Knoll.

Care Instructions

Cast-aluminium base

Wipe with a clean, slightly damp cloth. For marks, use mild soap solution on a soft cloth and dry immediately. Avoid abrasive products and solvent cleaners.

Fiberglass shell

Clean exposed fiberglass surfaces with a damp cloth and mild soap. Do not use abrasive pads or harsh chemical cleaners.

Fabric upholstery

Blot spills immediately. Use a mild pH-neutral fabric cleaner with a soft cloth. Professional upholstery cleaning recommended for deep cleaning.

Leather upholstery

Wipe with a dry or lightly damp cloth. Use dedicated leather cleaners and condition periodically. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight exposure.

20"W × 21.25"D × 32"H, seat height 18.5" (50.8 × 54.0 × 81.3 cm, seat 47.0 cm). At 20" wide, the Tulip Armless Chair has one of the most compact footprints of any design-grade dining chair.

The two shells are different moulded forms — the absence of the arm element in the Armless version results in a slightly different shell profile and a correspondingly slightly higher seat height. Both are suited to standard dining and desk height.

General guide: 42" round — 4 chairs; 47" round — 4 to 5; 54" round — 4 to 6; 60" round — 6 to 8. The Tulip Armless Chair's 20"W footprint and absence of legs means more chairs fit comfortably around a Saarinen table than most conventional dining chairs allow.

The Armless (151C) is 20"W, seat height 18.5", no arm. The Arm Chair (150A) is 26"W, seat height 18", continuous arm integrated into the shell. The Armless is the dining chair; the Arm Chair is the dining/meeting/guest chair.
