Its moulded polyurethane shell and contoured plywood seat achieve comfort through form rather than padding, while the solid steam-bent oak legs — available in five finishes — bring an organic warmth that makes it as natural a choice for a dining room as for a conference suite. The wood-leg version of the Saarinen Executive Arm Chair sits at the intersection of two worlds — the warmth of natural materials and the fluid, organic modernism of Saarinen's shell. Florence Knoll favoured it in residential interiors and dining applications, where the steam-bent oak legs, available in light oak, walnut, ebonized walnut, white, and black, ground the chair's sculptural upper form in something tangible and warm.

The upholstered shell wraps around the sitter's back and sides with a generous enclosure that no conventional four-legged dining chair achieves — and the integrated arm pads, part of the shell itself rather than added on separately, give the chair a unity of form that remains as resolved today as when Saarinen first produced it in 1950.

Care Instructions

Upholstered shell (fabric)

Vacuum regularly with a soft brush attachment to remove dust and surface debris. For spot cleaning, apply a mild soap solution with a clean damp cloth — blot gently, do not rub or scrub.

Upholstered shell (leather)

Wipe with a dry or slightly damp soft cloth for routine cleaning. Use a dedicated leather cleaner for marks and condition periodically to maintain suppleness.

Solid oak legs

Wipe with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Avoid abrasive products and prolonged moisture exposure. Painted finishes should be treated carefully to avoid chips and scratches.

It pairs directly with the Saarinen Dining Table (round or oval) and the Tulip Table, and was Florence Knoll's preferred choice for residential dining rooms and hospitality dining applications. The seat height of 46 cm is standard dining height.

The shell, seat construction, arms, and upholstery are identical. The difference is entirely in the legs: wood legs give a warmer, more residential feel; tubular steel gives a more architectural, industrial character — closer to the original Knoll planning office aesthetic. Both are correct — the choice depends on the interior.
