Eero Saarinen vowed to address the "ugly, confusing, unrestful world" he observed underneath chairs and tables — the so-called "slum of legs." A five-year design investigation led him to the revolutionary Pedestal Collection, introduced in 1958. The 96" oval is the largest table in that collection: 96"W × 54"D × 28.25"H, seating 8 to 10 people around a single cast-aluminium pedestal base finished in Rilsan® — a table of genuine scale and material presence whose oval format seats a large group without the rigidity of a rectangle. Available with tops in marble, granite, wood veneer, and laminate, with the base in White, Matte Black, or Grey. Winner of the 1969 Museum of Modern Art Award as part of the Pedestal Collection, and in continuous production by Knoll ever since.

The 96" oval is the largest and most architectural expression of Saarinen's Pedestal Collection. At this scale the table becomes more than a dining surface — it defines the room around it. The 54" depth allows full place settings for ten without compression, while the absence of corner legs keeps circulation around the table unusually fluid for an object of this size. Saarinen's central idea was to remove what he called the "slum of legs" beneath traditional tables. The single cast aluminium pedestal resolves the structure into one continuous sculptural form, leaving the floor entirely visible beneath. In marble, the 96" oval becomes a single uninterrupted field of natural stone veining across the full width of the table — something impossible to achieve with tiled or segmented surfaces.

Eero Saarinen (1910–1961) was a Finnish-American architect and designer whose work shaped the visual language of postwar modernism. His projects for Knoll include the Womb Chair and the complete Pedestal Collection. His architectural works include the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Washington Dulles International Airport, and the TWA Flight Center at JFK. Knoll is part of the MillerKnoll collective.

Care instructions

Cast-aluminium base

Wipe with a clean slightly damp cloth. Mild soap solution is safe on all Rilsan® finishes. Avoid abrasive pads and solvent-based cleaners.

Laminate top

Clean using a damp cloth and mild neutral cleaner. Keep edges dry to protect the MDF substrate.

Wood veneer top

Use a dry or lightly damp cloth. Avoid prolonged standing water and direct sunlight exposure.

Marble & granite

Use only pH-neutral cleaners. Wipe spills immediately. Natural stone variation and patina are normal characteristics.

Large-format marble

Professional installation is strongly recommended due to the weight and scale of the marble top.

As a guideline: at 96" length, allow 24–26" per person on the long sides (up to 3 per side) and one place at each end for 8 total; tighter spacing gives 10. Allow at least 36" from the table edge to walls or obstacles.

The 96" (243.8 cm wide, 54" deep) is the larger of the two oval sizes and seats 8–10 versus 6–8 for the 78". The 96" is the right choice for a dining room or boardroom where 8–10 seats are needed as a standard. The 78" is the better choice if the room is smaller or if 6–8 is the typical seating count and the larger scale would overpower the space. Contact our team if you are deciding between the two sizes — we can advise based on your room dimensions.

Yes — the marble top is a single large-format piece of natural stone, cut and finished to the full oval shape. The veining runs continuously across the full 96" width. No two tops are identical. Viewing stone samples in person before specifying is strongly recommended — contact our team.
