Saarinen Dining Table 60"

At 60" the Saarinen round table reaches the scale at which a round table becomes genuinely different from a rectangular or oval one — not just a different shape, but a different social object. Eight people seated at a 60" round can see and address each other without rotating in their chairs; the table is large enough for full place settings for six with generous spacing, or eight with comfortable spacing, and the absence of a head means every seat is the same seat. No one sits at the end; no one sits in the middle. The single pedestal base — scaled at 60" to a 26" foot for structural integrity — leaves the entire circular floor beneath the table completely clear. In marble, the 60" round is a significant object: the continuous circular stone top at this diameter is a striking piece in any room. In laminate with a white base, it is the same table in its most graphic and practical form.

Eero Saarinen spent years refining the Pedestal Collection to eliminate what he called the “slum of legs” beneath conventional tables and chairs. The 60" round is one of the clearest expressions of that idea — structurally rational, visually calm, and socially equal. Knoll continues to produce the collection in the USA as part of the MillerKnoll collective.
