The largest round table in Eero Saarinen's Pedestal Collection for Knoll, the 54" round was designed in 1956 with the same driving idea that produced every table in the series: to eliminate "the slum of legs" and reduce the table to a single resolved object — one cast-aluminium pedestal base rising from a 26" foot through a graceful stem to support a bevelled-edge top in marble, granite, wood veneer, or laminate. At 54" diameter and 28¼" high, this version seats 4 to 6 people — the right scale for a family dining room, a generous kitchen, or a meeting and lounge table in a design-led workplace or hospitality setting. Winner of the 1969 Museum of Modern Art Award as part of the Pedestal Collection, and in continuous production by Knoll since 1956.

The 54" round is the point at which the Saarinen table becomes a true dining-room anchor rather than a compact breakfast or breakout table. At this scale, six people can sit comfortably with full place settings and generous spacing, while four people experience the table as relaxed and spacious. The enlarged 26" pedestal foot keeps the proportions visually balanced and structurally stable. Marble tops such as Calacatta or Nero Marquina carry a visual presence at this size that smaller diameters cannot achieve. In White or Black laminate, the table becomes the purest graphic expression of Saarinen's original idea — a completely uninterrupted silhouette with no visual clutter beneath.

Eero Saarinen approached furniture as sculpture and architecture simultaneously. For the Pedestal Collection he spent years refining proportions through sketches, clay studies, and full-scale mock-ups before arriving at the final form. His goal was to eliminate what he called the “slum of legs” beneath tables and chairs. The result remains one of the clearest and most enduring expressions of modern furniture design. Knoll is part of the MillerKnoll collective alongside Herman Miller and other leading design brands.

Care instructions

Cast-aluminium base

Wipe with a soft damp cloth and mild soap solution. Avoid abrasive pads and solvent-based cleaners which can permanently damage the Rilsan® coating.

Laminate top

Clean using a damp cloth and neutral cleaner. Highly resistant to everyday wear and chemical exposure.

Wood veneer

Avoid prolonged moisture and direct sunlight. Use only soft cloths and mild neutral detergents.

Marble & granite

Use only pH-neutral cleaners. Wipe spills immediately. Avoid acidic cleaners and abrasive materials.

Marble handling

The 54" marble top is significantly heavier than laminate or veneer versions; two-person handling is recommended.

54" (137.2 cm) in diameter, 28¼" (71.8 cm) high. Seats 4–6 people comfortably. As a guideline: for 6 place settings on a 54" round, allow approximately 28" of table edge per person. Allow at least 36" from the table edge to the nearest wall or obstacle for comfortable seating and movement.

The 54" table uses a 26" diameter base foot, versus 20" on the 42" and 47" sizes. The larger base is required to provide structural stability across the wider top span. Proportionally it is in keeping with the top — the table does not feel unbalanced. This is part of Saarinen's five-year refinement process: the base diameter at each table size was precisely calculated, not estimated.

The published weight for the 54" round in laminate/veneer configuration is 103 lb (46.7 kg). A marble top adds significant additional weight. Two-person handling is strongly recommended; contact our team if you require professional delivery and installation.
