The 35" round is the smallest and most intimate table in the Saarinen Pedestal Collection — a compact single-pedestal dining table measuring 35.75" in diameter and 28.25" high, seating 2 to 3 people, and resolving Saarinen's five-year mission to eliminate "the slum of legs" in its most distilled form. A single cast-aluminium tulip pedestal base — finished in Rilsan® in White, Matte Black, or Grey — supports a bevelled-edge top in marble, granite, wood veneer, or laminate; there is no underframe, no apron, and nothing beneath the table but clear floor. Winner of the 1969 Museum of Modern Art Award as part of the Pedestal Collection, and in continuous production by Knoll since its 1958 introduction, it is the right table for a kitchen for two, a small dining room, a café, or anywhere that a complete and resolved round dining table is needed in a compact footprint.

The 35" table is the Pedestal Collection at its most economical — not in cost, but in space. Saarinen's five-year investigation into the table as a pure object arrived at a range of sizes and shapes that are each correct for a specific situation. The 35" is correct for two people. At this diameter there is enough surface for two full place settings with space between them; the table does not feel cramped or undersized.

The single 20" pedestal base is proportionally right for the top at this scale — it does not look too large or too small. In a kitchen or small dining room, the absence of legs is the practical advantage: you can pull a chair from any position without navigating around a corner post, and the floor beneath the table reads as clear.

Eero Saarinen (1910–1961) was one of the defining designers and architects of the modern era. His work for Knoll includes the Womb Chair and the full Pedestal Collection. Saarinen sought to eliminate what he called the “slum of legs” beneath tables and chairs, resulting in the iconic single-pedestal Tulip form that remains one of the most recognisable silhouettes in modern furniture history.

Care Instructions

Cast-aluminium base

Wipe with a clean, slightly damp cloth for routine cleaning. Avoid abrasive pads or solvent-based cleaners.

Laminate top

Clean with a damp cloth and mild neutral cleaner. Keep edges dry to protect the MDF substrate.

Wood veneer top

Use a dry or slightly damp cloth only. Avoid standing water and prolonged direct sunlight.

Marble top

Use only pH-neutral cleaners. Wipe spills immediately. Natural veining variation is characteristic of the material.

Granite top

Wipe with a damp cloth and mild cleaner. Avoid acidic cleaning products.

The 42" seats 4 comfortably; the 35" is optimised for 2 with a possible third. If you typically dine as a couple but occasionally need a third seat, the 35" is the more spatially efficient choice. If you regularly need to seat 4, the 42" is the correct size. Both use the same 20" base diameter and the same construction.

Yes — the cast-aluminium pedestal base is a heavy, moulded single form specifically engineered for the table's diameter. Saarinen spent five years calculating the correct proportions at each size. The 35" table with its 20" base foot is fully stable for normal dining use.
