Pollock Arm Chair

Designed by Charles Pollock

Designed by Charles Pollock in 1960 and originally manufactured from 1964–79, the Pollock Arm Chair — known in its original form as the '657' or 'sling chair' — is one of the most resolved lounge chairs in the Knoll collection: tubular steel legs connect to cast-aluminium arms and stretchers with exposed hardware, while a structural metal rim traces the chair's perimeter, protecting the seat and defining its silhouette in a single continuous gesture. Available with a cowhide sling in Cognac, Chocolate, or Black, and an optional seat cushion upholstered in Hidden Valley, Continental Divide, or Black Leather, the chair sits at 64 cm W × 66 cm D × 70.5 cm H with a 41 cm seat height — a compact, precise object whose proportions have changed nothing since Pollock set them down over sixty years ago. Reintroduced by Knoll in 2015, it remains an enduring icon of the modern workplace, starting from €2,886.

Living rooms & residential interiors

In Cognac or Chocolate cowhide, the Pollock Arm Chair brings mid-century warmth beside a sofa, in a reading corner, or as a pair.

Executive offices & studies

Originally developed for workplace environments — still the correct choice for serious desk and reception settings.

Hospitality & hotel lobbies

Exposed chrome and cast-aluminium hardware give the chair a material precision suited to premium hospitality spaces.

Design collections

A Knoll classic produced for more than sixty years — appropriate wherever design heritage matters.

The Pollock Arm Chair is a small object with an unusually complete logic. Pollock's idea was simple: the frame's structural rim — a continuous metal rod tracing the chair's perimeter — should do everything at once. It protects the sling. It defines the silhouette. It connects the tubular steel legs to the cast-aluminium arms without concealment, with all hardware exposed. The result is a chair that looks the same from every angle: resolved, undecorated, and impossible to improve by addition or subtraction. At 64 cm wide and 66 cm deep, it occupies less floor space than most chairs of comparable comfort — which makes it easy to pair, easy to cluster, and easy to live with over a long time. Designed in 1960. Still correct.

✦ Designed by Charles Pollock for Knoll, 1960

Charles Pollock (1930–2013) was born in Philadelphia and trained at Pratt Institute, graduating in 1953. He worked with George Nelson at Herman Miller before opening his own studio and presenting his work to Florence Knoll in the late 1950s. The 657 Sling Chair followed in 1960; Florence Knoll reportedly called the prototype "gold" when she first saw it. Five years later Pollock introduced the 1250 Series executive chair — now known simply as the Pollock Executive Chair — which remains one of Knoll's best-selling designs. Knoll is part of the MillerKnoll collective alongside Herman Miller and other leading design brands.

Care instructions

Chrome tubular steel legs

Wipe with a clean slightly damp cloth for routine cleaning. Mild soap solution is safe for marks. Dry immediately and avoid abrasive pads or solvent-based cleaners.

Cast-aluminium arms & stretchers

Clean using a soft microfiber cloth and mild soap solution. Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive products that could damage the painted finish.

Cowhide sling upholstery

Use a dedicated leather cleaner applied with a soft cloth. Avoid saturation, solvents, and alcohol-based cleaners. Leather develops a natural patina over time.

Optional leather cushion

Remove cushion for deeper cleaning if required. Condition periodically to maintain suppleness and surface quality.

Sustainability & provenance

Design longevity

Designed in 1960 and produced for more than sixty years — the most sustainable product is one that never requires replacement.

Serviceable construction

Steel, aluminium, and leather components can be individually replaced without replacing the entire chair.

Material declarations

Product certifications and sustainability declarations are available through Ecomedes and Knoll specification resources.

Bertoia.

—— QUESTIONS

Everything you might ask before buying.

The 657 is the original model number assigned by Knoll when the chair was first introduced in the early 1960s. It is also commonly called the 'sling chair' after its cowhide sling seat. Today it is simply called the Pollock Arm Chair — the same design, the same construction, reintroduced by Knoll in 2015.

The sling is the primary upholstered surface — the cowhide piece that forms both the seat and back within the metal rim frame. Cognac is a warm tan, Chocolate is a deep brown, and Black is a true black cowhide. All three are natural cowhide and will develop a patina over time. The colour choice is aesthetic — there is no structural or functional difference between them. If you are unsure, Cognac is the warmer and most traditionally mid-century option; Black is the most versatile across different interiors.

No — the chair is fully functional and comfortable without the optional seat cushion. The cowhide sling provides the primary seating surface and is the design as Pollock conceived it. The cushion is an optional addition for those who prefer a softer, upholstered seat surface. It sits within the sling and does not alter the chair's structure or visible silhouette.

The cushion upholstery (Hidden Valley, Continental Divide, or Black Leather) is independent of the sling colour. Black Leather pairs naturally with the Black sling for a fully tonal result. The other combinations — Cognac or Chocolate sling with Hidden Valley or Continental Divide cushion — offer tonal contrast. Contact our team to discuss combinations before ordering.

64 cm W × 66 cm D × 70.5 cm H, with a seat height of 41 cm. In imperial terms: 25.2" W × 26" D × 27.75" H, 16.1" seat height. The chair is compact relative to its comfort — its 64 cm width makes it easy to place beside a sofa, in a corner, or in pairs without dominating a room.

They are separate designs by the same designer. The Arm Chair (657) was designed in 1960 and is a lounge or occasional chair — fixed legs, cowhide sling, no swivel. The Executive Chair (1250 Series) was designed in 1965 and is a fully adjustable task and management chair with Pollock's patented aluminium rim frame. Both are in the Knoll collection. The Arm Chair came first and initiated Pollock's relationship with Knoll.

Yes — the Pollock Arm Chair we supply is a 100% genuine Knoll product, manufactured by Knoll (KnollStudio), part of the MillerKnoll collective.

Contact us to arrange a viewing. We strongly recommend seeing the sling colours in person before specifying — Cognac and Chocolate in particular read differently under different lighting conditions and alongside different interior finishes.
