The Tubular Brno Chair is the original and longest-running version of Mies' cantilevered dining chair design — 24 of them were distributed across the rooms of the Tugendhat Villa when it was completed in 1930, and the design has been in continuous production ever since. The tubular steel profile gives the chair a rounded softness that the Flat Bar version does not have — the circular cross-section of the frame repeats the curve of the cantilever in a way that feels resolved at every angle. Optional leather armpads are available on the Tubular and not on the Flat Bar, making it the more versatile of the two for settings where arm support matters. Three frame finishes are available — polished chrome, satin chrome, and Onyx matte — giving the Tubular a wider specification range than the Flat Bar, which is available in polished chrome only. The KnollStudio logo and Mies' signature are stamped into the base of every chair — a mark of authenticity and a condition of Knoll's ongoing collaboration with the Mies van der Rohe Archives at The Museum of Modern Art, New York.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886–1969) was one of the defining architects of the 20th century and the philosophical soul of the modern movement. Director of the Bauhaus from 1930 until its closure in 1933, Mies brought an uncompromising less-is-more discipline to everything he designed — from the Barcelona Pavilion to the Seagram Building. The Brno Chair, designed for the Tugendhat Villa in 1930, is his most widely produced seating design and remains in continuous production by Knoll. Knoll is part of the MillerKnoll collective, alongside Herman Miller, NaughtOne, and other leading design brands.

Care instructions

Tubular chrome-plated steel frame (all finishes)

Wipe with a clean, slightly damp microfiber cloth for routine cleaning. For marks, a mild soap solution on a soft cloth is safe on polished and satin chrome finishes. Dry immediately — do not allow water to stand on the frame. Do not use abrasive pads or acidic cleaners, which will permanently damage the chrome or Onyx matte coating.

Spinneybeck leather upholstery

Wipe spills immediately with a clean, dry cloth. For routine cleaning, use a barely damp cloth and allow to dry naturally. Apply a quality leather conditioner periodically. Keep out of direct sunlight. Do not use household cleaners, silicone-based, or solvent-based treatments.

Knoll Textiles upholstery

Most Knoll Textiles carry a W or WS cleaning code — clean with a mild water-based solution and a soft cloth. Blot spills immediately; do not rub. Vacuum periodically to remove dust and maintain surface appearance.

Leather armpads (optional)

Wipe with a dry or barely damp cloth. Avoid prolonged contact with sharp objects. The armpads are removable — consult your Knoll representative if replacement is required. Keep away from heat sources and direct sunlight.

Plastic glides (included)

Snap-in glides require no maintenance. If a glide is lost or damaged, contact your Knoll dealer for replacements. Glides are optional — the chair may be used without them on carpeted surfaces.

Everything you might ask before buying.

The Tubular (55 × 63 cm, seat h 44.5 cm) is slightly narrower and deeper than the Flat Bar (58 × 59 cm, seat h 46 cm). The Tubular uses a round steel tube profile rather than flat bar stock, giving it a softer, more rounded appearance. It is available in polished chrome, satin chrome, and Onyx matte, whereas the Flat Bar is available in polished chrome only. The Tubular also offers optional leather armpads, which are not available on the Flat Bar. Both share the same cantilevered construction logic and the same overall height of 79 cm.

The Brno is a cantilever design — the entire structure is resolved by the spring tension of the continuous steel frame, which curves from the front floor contact point up into the seat support and then as uprights to the back. This gives the seat a slight, passive flex with the sitter's weight — a quality that a rigid four-legged chair cannot offer. The floating appearance and the live comfort of the seat are inseparable from the same structural logic.

Yes — optional leather armpads are available on the Tubular frame. They are compatible with polished chrome and Onyx matte finishes. Satin chrome is only available without armpads. Armpads are not available on the Flat Bar version. Specify at time of order.

Yes — a thicker seatpad option is available for added comfort, particularly for extended seated use. Specify at time of order. The standard variable-density foam cushion is true to Mies' original design profile; the thicker option adds comfort while retaining the chair's characteristic silhouette.
