Designed by Eero Saarinen in 1948 at Florence Knoll's request for "a chair that was like a basket full of pillows — something I could really curl up in," the Womb Chair is one of the most recognised and enduring symbols of mid-century modern design: a moulded fibreglass shell covered in foam and upholstery, set on a tubular steel base with polished chrome finish, shaped to support multiple sitting postures and to provide an instinctive sense of enclosure and security that gives the chair its name. Available as a set with its matching ottoman (25½"W × 20"D × 16"H), in four upholstery colours — Ivory, Brown, Fire Red, and Latte — the chair measures 40"W × 34"D × 35½"H with a 16" seat height and carries GREENGUARD Indoor Air Quality certification. In continuous production by Knoll since 1948, it has never been discontinued, never been improved upon, and never stopped being the correct answer when the brief calls for a chair you can truly disappear into.

The Womb Chair exists because Florence Knoll wanted something different from every lounge chair of the late 1940s. She asked Eero Saarinen for a chair she could curl up in — something relaxed rather than formal. Saarinen responded with a precisely curved fiberglass shell that supports multiple sitting positions without forcing any single posture. The comfort comes from the geometry itself rather than from excessive padding. The ottoman extends that logic naturally, creating a complete resting arrangement for the entire body.

In Ivory the chair feels luminous and architectural. In Brown it gains the warmth associated with classic mid-century interiors. Fire Red transforms the shell into a sculptural statement, while Latte integrates quietly into almost any interior palette. Designed in 1948 and never fundamentally improved upon, the Womb Chair remains one of the clearest examples of modern furniture resolving comfort, structure, and form simultaneously.

Eero Saarinen was a Finnish-American architect and industrial designer whose work defined the visual language of postwar modernism. At Knoll he created some of the company's most important works, including the Womb Chair and Tulip collection. His architectural projects included the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, the TWA Flight Center at JFK Airport, and Washington Dulles International Airport. Knoll is part of the MillerKnoll collective alongside Herman Miller and other leading design brands.

Care instructions

Fabric upholstery

Use a dry or slightly damp soft cloth for routine cleaning. Blot spills immediately and avoid rubbing fabric fibres. Use only mild pH-neutral fabric cleaners.

Fiberglass shell

The moulded fiberglass shell requires no routine maintenance. If exposed during restoration, wipe gently with mild soap and water.

Polished chrome base

Clean with a soft damp cloth and dry immediately. Avoid abrasive pads and solvent-based cleaners which may damage chrome surfaces.

Articulating glides

Check periodically for wear and replace when necessary to protect flooring surfaces.

Ottoman care

Follow identical upholstery and chrome care instructions for the matching ottoman.

All four upholstery colours (Ivory, Brown, Fire Red, Latte) use the same construction and materials — the difference is purely aesthetic. Ivory is a warm off-white, the most luminous and spatially open option. Brown is a deep, warm tone that suits mid-century and residential interiors. Fire Red is the boldest option — it makes the shell's sculptural form the centrepiece of any space. Latte is a warm mid-beige, the most versatile and neutral of the four. If you are unsure, Ivory and Latte are the most interior-flexible; Brown and Fire Red are the most characterful. We strongly recommend viewing the colours in person before specifying — contact us to arrange a viewing.

The seat shell is moulded fiberglass — formed to the precise curvature of Saarinen's 1948 design. It is covered in polyester fibre fill with a foam core, then fully upholstered. The comfort of the Womb Chair comes primarily from the shape of the shell, not from the depth of the padding — which is exactly what Saarinen intended: a chair that holds you through geometry, not softness.

The deep, curved shell is wide enough and open enough to allow you to sit straight, lean to one side, tuck your legs up, or curl inward — without any single posture being "correct." Most lounge chairs are optimised for one position. The Womb Chair is optimised for the full range of how a person actually occupies a chair. This was the explicit design brief from Florence Knoll and the explicit achievement of Saarinen's fiberglass shell.

Yes — the standard base is polished chrome tubular steel, which is the most widely specified option and the original finish. Black paint and 18k gold plating are also available through Knoll. Contact our team to discuss alternative base finishes before placing an order.
