Eero Saarinen vowed to address the "ugly, confusing, unrestful world" he observed underneath chairs and tables — the so-called "slum of legs." A five-year design investigation led him to the revolutionary Pedestal Collection, and the Tulip Arm Chair is its most complete expression: a single moulded fiberglass shell, generous enough to form both seat and continuous arm in one sweeping gesture, set on a single cast-aluminium pedestal base in White, Black, or Grey Rilsan® paint. Measuring 26"W × 23.25"D × 32"H with an 18" seat height and 25.375" arm height, it is the natural companion to the Saarinen Dining Table in any size or format — and equally at home at a desk, in a meeting room, or as a statement dining chair in its own right. Upholstery cushion available in the full range of KnollTextiles and Spinneybeck Leathers; optional swivel base.

The arm version of the Tulip Chair does something the armless cannot: it makes the chair its own complete object. The armless version is a dining chair — optimal as one of four or six around a Saarinen table. The arm version can stand alone. The continuous shell — seat, back, and arm in a single moulded fiberglass form — gives the chair a self-contained visual logic that reads from across a room. At 26" wide it is broader than the armless and sits with more presence; at 18" seat height it is correct for both standard dining height and standard desk height. The cast- aluminium pedestal base in White or Black repeats the single- stem formula of the Saarinen Tables — specify them together and the room becomes a coherent Pedestal Collection interior.

With the Pedestal Collection, Saarinen worked first with hundreds of drawings, then ¼ scale models arranged in a scale-model room the size of a doll house — because the central idea was to design chairs that looked good in a room. He then refined each design through full-scale clay models, endlessly adjusting the shell curvature. “The choices really become a sculptor's choice,” he wrote. Knoll is part of the MillerKnoll collective.

Care Instructions

Cast-aluminium base (White / Black Rilsan®)

Wipe with a clean, slightly damp cloth for routine cleaning. Mild soap solution on a soft cloth for marks — dry immediately. Do not use abrasive pads or solvent-based cleaners.

Fiberglass shell (bare or upholstered)

If the shell surface is exposed (no cushion), wipe with a damp cloth and mild soap. Do not use abrasive products on bare fiberglass.

Seat cushion — fabric upholstery

Use a clean, dry or lightly damp cloth. Blot spills immediately — do not rub. Use mild pH-neutral fabric cleaner and avoid saturation.

Seat cushion — leather upholstery

Wipe with a dry or lightly damp soft cloth. Use a dedicated leather cleaner and condition periodically.

26"W × 23.25"D × 32"H, seat height 18", arm height 25.375" (66.0 × 59.1 × 81.3 cm, seat 45.7 cm, arm 64.5 cm). The 18" seat height is suited to both standard dining tables (28–30" height) and standard desk height.

The Arm Chair (model 150A) is 26"W with a continuous shell that integrates the arm into the seat and back as a single moulded form — no separate arm pieces. The Armless (model 151C) is 20"W and omits the arm entirely. The Arm Chair is broader, more self-contained as a standalone piece, and suited to settings where guest or conversation seating comfort is a priority. The Armless is the more compact, purely dining-focused version.
