Platner designed the Ottoman specifically to complete the seating experience the Easy Chair begins — a deep, reclined lounging position that requires proper support beneath the legs to be genuinely restful rather than merely comfortable in the upper body. At 26.75" square and 16.8"H, the ottoman is scaled to sit naturally in front of the Easy Chair at a complementary height, with the same molded fibreglass shell and latex foam cushion construction giving it a comfortable, slightly yielding surface rather than a hard or flat platform. Like the Easy Chair, the ottoman shares the collection's underlying wire-rod base construction — nickel-plated steel rods welded to circular horizontal and edge-framing rods — ensuring visual and material consistency across the pairing. But the design works equally well detached from that specific pairing: as a standalone low seat, a footrest for any chair in the room, or simply a sculptural object with a useful flat surface. Held in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art alongside the rest of the Platner Collection, the Ottoman brings the same manufacturing philosophy — structure as ornament, achieved through painstaking welded construction — to one of the most versatile pieces in the entire range.

✦ Designed by Warren Platner, 1966

Warren Platner (1919–2006) was born in Baltimore and graduated from Cornell University's School of Architecture in 1941. From 1945 to 1950 he worked for Raymond Loewy and I. M. Pei; from 1960 to 1965 he was part of Eero Saarinen's office, contributing to major projects including Dulles International Airport. In 1967 he founded his own practice, Platner Associates, in Connecticut. As an architect in his own right, Platner designed the Georg Jensen Design Center and the celebrated Windows on the World restaurant atop the World Trade Center, both in New York City — but it was his 1966 furniture collection for Knoll that earned him worldwide renown. Reflecting on his design philosophy, Platner said: "I began to think about what I thought furniture, specifically a chair, really might be, starting with the philosophy that it isn't going to be aggressively technological, or aggressively handicraft." Knoll is part of the MillerKnoll collective.

Care Instructions

Welded Steel Wire Base (Polished Nickel): Wipe with a clean, slightly damp soft cloth for routine maintenance. For minor marks, a mild soap solution on a soft cloth is safe—dry immediately and completely. Do not use abrasive pads, scouring products, or solvent-based cleaners, which will permanently damage the clear lacquer coating and the underlying plating. Because the base is an open radial lattice, dust can accumulate at the weld intersections; a soft brush or compressed air is effective for routine dusting.

Upholstered Shell and Cushion (Fabric): Brush or vacuum periodically to remove dust and maintain fabric structure. Use an appropriate textile cleaner for marks—always test in an inconspicuous area first; blot gently, do not rub or scrub. Follow the specific care instructions provided for your selected Knoll Textile specification. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight to prevent fabric upholstery from fading over time.
