Designed by Warren Platner for Knoll in 1966, the Platner Side Table brings the collection's defining rod-wire base — hundreds of vertical cold-drawn steel rods, finished in Polished Nickel or Bronze — into its most compact table form, at 457 mm height and 387 mm diameter, making it the right scale for use beside a lounge chair, at the end of a sofa, or as a secondary surface within a Platner seating grouping. The top — in clear glass, bronze glass, veneer, or marble — recesses flush within the circular rod-wire frame, and the transparency of the clear glass option in particular reduces the visual weight of this already light-looking piece to almost nothing.

The Platner Side Table demonstrates the rod-wire construction of the collection at its most refined scale. At just 387 mm in diameter, the intricate steel base reads almost like jewellery, while the tabletop — in glass, veneer, or marble — completes the object with a strong architectural clarity.

In interiors already furnished with Platner seating, the Side Table becomes the natural extension of the collection. In spaces where it stands alone, it remains a fully resolved sculptural object in its own right. Matching or contrasting frame finishes allow the table either to unify or intentionally offset surrounding furniture compositions.

Care Instructions

Polished Nickel base

Wipe with a soft dry or slightly damp lint-free cloth. Mild soap solution is safe for marks. Avoid abrasive pads and harsh chemical cleaners.

Bronze base

Clean with a soft dry cloth. Patina development over time is natural and expected.

Glass tops

Use a microfiber cloth or mild glass cleaner. Avoid impact on glass edges and abrasive materials.

Veneer tops

Wipe with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Avoid standing water, solvents, and prolonged direct sunlight.

Marble tops

Clean immediately after spills. Use only pH-neutral cleaners and avoid acidic products. Natural veining variation is characteristic of marble.

Both use the same rod-wire base construction and the same top material options.

At Ø387 mm, the clear glass top is the most visually open option — the transparency removes almost all visual weight from an already compact piece, and the rod frame reads as a pure sculptural object. The veneer options (particularly Light Walnut or Light Oak) add warmth suited to hospitality and residential settings. The marble top at this scale has an exceptional material presence — the Arabescato Marble veining within a small circular format is particularly striking.
