Florence Knoll never thought of her Bench as a signature design — she described it, along with her other occasional pieces, as one of the "fill-in pieces that no one else wants to do." That modesty is part of why the design has endured so completely: it was never asked to make a statement, only to solve a specific seating problem with total material and structural honesty. The Relaxed Bench takes that same spare, geometric profile — the exposed heavy gauge steel frame, finished in polished or satin chrome, with no ornamentation beyond what the structure itself requires — and lowers its horizon, softening the sit for a generation of interiors that favor a more casual, relaxed posture than the offices Florence Knoll originally designed for. Underneath the tufted upholstery, a solid wood inner frame and No-Sag spring suspension do the actual work of comfort, while the visible chrome legs keep the piece looking as architecturally precise as anything else in the Florence Knoll Collection. Used as a bench, an ottoman, or even an impromptu coffee table, the Three Seater brings a "softer sit" to a design vocabulary defined, above all, by restraint. The KnollStudio logo and Florence Knoll's own signature are stamped into the base frame of every bench.

Florence Knoll Bassett (1917–2019) was a pioneering American architect and interior designer who revolutionized modern corporate office design. Studying under master modernist architects including Mies van der Rohe and Eliel Saarinen, she applied structural clarity and architectural rigor to interior spaces through the influential Knoll Planning Unit. Her meticulously proportioned furniture pieces have become iconic, definitive pillars of mid-century modernism.

Care Instructions

Upholstered Cushion (Fabric): Brush or vacuum periodically to remove dust. For marks, use a fabric-appropriate cleaner — test in an inconspicuous area first. Do not over-wet the upholstery; blot rather than rub. Follow the care instructions specific to the selected KnollTextiles fabric. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, which will fade fabric upholstery over time.

Upholstered Cushion (Leather): Wipe with a dry or very lightly damp soft cloth for routine cleaning. Use a dedicated leather cleaner for marks — apply gently, do not rub aggressively. Condition the leather periodically with a suitable leather conditioner. Do not use household detergents, alcohol-based products, or solvents. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, which will dry and fade leather over time.

Exposed Steel Frame: Wipe with a clean, slightly damp soft cloth for routine cleaning. Mild soap solution on a soft cloth is safe for marks — dry immediately. Do not leave standing moisture on chrome. Do not use abrasive pads, scouring products, or solvent-based cleaners.

Сварное основание из стального прута толщиной 11 мм — в хромированном исполнении или с порошковым покрытием, с креплениями из нержавеющей стали — остается структурно и визуально созвучным всей коллекции Bertoia. Меняется лишь сиденье, представляющее собой цельную литую чашу из нейлона, армированного стекловолокном, доступную в шести знаковых цветах: черный, синий, средне-серый, оранжево-красный, белый и желтый. Чаша мягко пружинит под весом человека, что качественно отличает её от проволочной решетки: это сплошная, слегка уступающая поверхность, а не сетка из пересекающихся прутьев. Белые или черные окрашенные основания в сочетании со специальным исполнением чаши позволяют использовать данную модель на открытом воздухе. Гарри Бертойя (1915–1978) родился в Сан-Лоренцо, Italy, и в возрасте 15 лет иммигрировал в Детройт.
