Shell Seat & Lineage
A more colorful Bertoia statement. For interiors requiring the iconic wire silhouette but looking for distinct color accents and contoured shell comfort over the original bare wire-lattice geometry.
The molded shell is highly resilient and remarkably straightforward to sanitize. Its expansive color range offers commercial venues an easy way to align seating options with overall brand identities.
With a gentle, ergonomic structural flex and approachable color tones, this variation fits fluidly into family spaces, residential play areas, and vibrant contemporary open kitchens.
Configured with a white or black powder-coated base, the molded shell stool handles outdoor environments smoothly, marrying classic mid-century structural frames with modern, weather-ready engineering.
The Molded Shell Barstool answers a specific question that the original 1952 Bertoia stool does not: what if the seat could carry colour the way the rest of a room does? Chrome and powder-coat are material finishes, not colour palettes β white, black, and the rod's inherent metallic quality are essentially the only visual variables on the original stool. By introducing a separate molded shell seat β glass-fibre reinforced nylon or polypropylene, available across a genuine colour range β Knoll's 1960 reintroduction (and its continued contemporary production) opens the Bertoia silhouette to a much broader interior design vocabulary. The wire-rod base remains structurally and visually consistent with the rest of the collection: the same welded sled-base legs, the same Knoll logo stamped into the back of the base, the same chrome-or-powder-coat finish choice. What changes is the seat itself β contoured rather than latticed, flexing as a single shell rather than as a grid of individual rods, and available in a spectrum of colours that customers can mix freely across multiple stools or hold to a single tone for a more disciplined look. The result is a stool that retains full Bertoia design authenticity while opening genuinely new decorating possibilities that the original wire-seat version cannot offer.
Harry Bertoia (1915β1978) was born in San Lorenzo, Italy, and immigrated to Detroit at age 15. He studied at the Detroit Technical High School, the Detroit School of Arts and Crafts, and Cranbrook Academy of Art, where he later taught metalcraft and jewelry design and formed close friendships with Eero Saarinen, Charles and Ray Eames, and Florence Schust (later Florence Knoll). In 1943 he moved to California to help the Eameses develop their molded plywood furniture techniques β a contribution that has historically received little public credit. Florence and Hans Knoll later persuaded him to relocate east and set up an independent metal workshop within Knoll's production facility, giving him complete creative freedom. The resulting wire chair collection, introduced in 1952, became one of the most recognized achievements of twentieth-century design. In 1960, the collection expanded with the introduction of the contoured molded shell, introducing color and continuous surfaces to the wire architecture. Royalties from his furniture allowed Bertoia to dedicate the rest of his career to large-scale metal sculpture. Knoll is part of the MillerKnoll collective.
Care Instructions
Welded Steel Base (Chrome or Powder Coat): Dust or wipe down periodically with a clean, damp soft microfiber cloth. For stubborn surface markings, use a mild solution of liquid hand soap and water; ensure you dry the frame immediately. Never employ abrasive scouring sponges or chemical solvents.
Molded Shell Seat: Wipe clean using a soft, damp cloth. A gentle soap mixture is entirely safe for lifting localized marks. Refrain from applying harsh scouring pads or solvent-laden formulas, as these actions risk dulling the plastic shell's uniform factory surface finish. Designed to remain exceptionally simple to maintain across intensive applications.
Sustainability & Standards
The Bertoia Molded Shell Barstool series is officially GREENGUARD Indoor Air Quality Certified, validating healthy indoor conditions via low chemical emanation thresholds.
Knoll utilizes highly optimized eco-conscious production systems across its authorized plants, maintaining manufacturing alignment with the ISO 14001 certification structural framework of the MillerKnoll collective.
Warranty Terms: Please reach out directly to our regional customer support office in Almaty for deep insight into localized residential or commercial project warranty coverage scopes.

ββ QUESTIONS
Everything you might ask before buying.
The standard Bertoia Barstool (1952) uses the original welded wire lattice for both the structure and the seat β the entire chair is steel rod. The Molded Shell Barstool (1960 reintroduction) keeps the wire-rod base but replaces the wire seat with a separate molded plastic shell available in a range of colours, offering a more contoured seat and a far broader colour palette than the original allows.
Counter Height, pairing with 36β39"H counters and tables, and Bar Height, pairing with 40β43"H counters and tables. Contact our team to confirm the exact dimensions for each configuration.
Glass-fibre reinforced nylon or polypropylene, depending on the specific configuration. Both materials provide a durable, slightly flexible seating surface and accept a wide range of moulded-in colours.
Yes, when specified with a white or black powder-coat base (not chrome). Contact our team to confirm the correct base finish and shell material for an outdoor application.
Yes β mixing shell colours across stools, or keeping a single colour for a uniform look, are both common and supported approaches. Contact our team for the current colour range available.
Yes β 100% genuine Knoll. The Knoll logo is stamped into the back of the base. Knoll is the only authorised and licensed manufacturer of the Bertoia Collection.
Please contact our team in Almaty for full warranty terms.
