For dining rooms that want the structural lightness of the Bertoia base with a contoured seat and a genuine colour palette, the Molded Shell Side Chair delivers both β the seat flexes naturally with the sitter while introducing colour the bare wire lattice cannot.
Durable, easy to clean, and available across six colours, the Molded Shell Side Chair is practical for commercial and institutional dining settings where colour coordination and ease of maintenance matter as much as design pedigree.
The lighter, more playful material tone of the molded shell β combined with genuine colour options β makes this chair particularly well suited to family dining areas, where a more approachable material reading is preferred over chrome and bare wire.
Pairing Molded Shell Side Chairs in varied colours around a single table creates a deliberately eclectic, collected-over-time dining arrangement β a popular approach for design-forward homes that want visual variety without sacrificing consistency.
The Molded Shell Side Chair answers the same question for dining seating that the Molded Shell Barstool answers for counter seating: what if the Bertoia silhouette could carry colour the way the rest of an interior does? The welded 11mm steel rod base β chrome or powder coat, with stainless steel connections β remains structurally and visually consistent with the rest of the Bertoia Collection. What changes is the seat, now a single molded shell in glass-fibre reinforced nylon, available in six distinct colours: Black, Blue, Medium Grey, Orange Red, White, and Yellow. The shell flexes naturally under the sitter's weight in a way distinct from the wire lattice β a continuous, slightly yielding surface rather than a grid of individual rod intersections. White or black painted bases, paired with an appropriately rated shell, extend this configuration to outdoor use. The Knoll logo is stamped into the back of the base, exactly as on every other authentic piece in the collection.
Harry Bertoia (1915β1978) was born in San Lorenzo, Italy, and immigrated to Detroit at age 15. He studied at the Detroit Technical High School, the Detroit School of Arts and Crafts, and Cranbrook Academy of Art, where he later taught metalcraft and jewelry design and formed close friendships with Eero Saarinen, Charles and Ray Eames, and Florence Schust (later Florence Knoll). In 1943 he moved to California to help the Eameses develop their molded plywood furniture techniques β a contribution that has historically received little public credit. Florence and Hans Knoll later persuaded him to relocate east and set up an independent metal workshop within Knoll's production facility, giving him complete creative freedom. The resulting wire chair collection, introduced in 1952, became one of the most recognized achievements of twentieth-century design. Royalties from the collection allowed Bertoia to dedicate the rest of his career to large-scale metal sculpture, including commissions for the General Motors Technical Center and the MIT Chapel altar. His honors include the AIA Gold Medal and Designer of the Year, USA, 1955. Knoll is part of the MillerKnoll collective.
Care Instructions
Welded Steel Base (Chrome or Powder Coat): Wipe regularly with a clean, soft damp cloth. A mild, diluted soap solution is safe for removing stubborn surface marks. Avoid any abrasive tools or harsh chemical solvents to maintain the original finish integrity.
Molded Nylon Shell: Clean routinely using a damp, soft cloth and mild soap solution to clear any surface marks. Avoid abrasive pads or strong chemical solvents to safely protect the rich, colored matte finish from scuffing.
Sustainability & Standards
The Bertoia Molded Shell architecture is fully GREENGUARD Certified across all production seating configurations, validating rigorous ecological testing standards for low chemical emissions into surrounding microclimates.
Knoll adheres to strict environmental directives, operating modern production infrastructures in perfect alignment with the global ISO 14001 certification framework managed by the MillerKnoll collective.
