To ensure enduring field performance, the frame is protected with a highly durable Rilsan finish rather than delicate indoor chrome, and assembled with premium stainless steel components rather than standard steel at every joint. The open lattice structure that grants the indoor version its iconic visual lightness performs a functional dual role outdoors — offering minimal wind resistance and immediate water shedding. The industrial Rilsan finish actively resists scratching, chipping, and harsh chemical exposure from sunscreens, swimming pool elements, and corrosive coastal salt air. The result is an architectural barstool that performs flawlessly through years of demanding exterior use without compromising a single element of Bertoia's original 1952 vision.

Harry Bertoia (1915–1978) was born in San Lorenzo, Italy, and immigrated to Detroit at age 15. He studied at the Detroit Technical High School, the Detroit School of Arts and Crafts, and Cranbrook Academy of Art, where he later taught metalcraft and jewelry design and formed close friendships with Eero Saarinen, Charles and Ray Eames, and Florence Schust (later Florence Knoll). In 1943 he moved to California to help the Eameses develop their molded plywood furniture techniques — a contribution that has historically received little public credit. Florence and Hans Knoll later persuaded him to relocate east and set up an independent metal workshop within Knoll's production facility, giving him complete creative freedom. The resulting wire chair collection, introduced in 1952, became one of the most recognized achievements of twentieth-century design. Royalties from the collection allowed Bertoia to dedicate the rest of his career to large-scale metal sculpture, including commissions for the General Motors Technical Center and the MIT Chapel altar. His honors include the AIA Gold Medal and Designer of the Year, USA, 1955. Knoll is part of the MillerKnoll collective.

Rilsan® Protective Finish Frame: Wash down regularly with fresh water and a mild, non-abrasive liquid detergent to clear accumulated dust, salt deposits, or chemical film. Clean using a soft, lint-free cloth or sponge. Avoid abrasive pads, stiff wire brushes, or industrial solvents which could scratch or compromise the protective nylon barrier layer.

Outdoor-Grade Vinyl Seat Pad: Wipe periodically with a clean, damp cloth. For heavier dirt or sunscreen accumulation, use a mild soap solution and rinse thoroughly with clean water. Wipe dry with a clean towel. Do not submerge the pad or use intense industrial chemical cleaners. Ensure the metal lock-snaps are kept clear of debris to maintain easy removal and reattachment.
