The Flat Bar Brno was originally designed for the master bedroom of the Tugendhat Villa in 1930 — there was only one such chair in the house — and was not subsequently put into production. In 1958, Phillip Johnson requested that Knoll produce it for his design of the Four Seasons restaurant in New York. With Mies' approval, a few slight adjustments were made including added cushioning. Knoll has produced it to those specifications ever since.
The Flat Bar (58 × 59 cm, seat h 46 cm) is slightly wider and shallower than the Tubular (55 × 63 cm, seat h 44.5 cm). The Flat Bar uses a flat steel bar profile rather than round tubing, giving it a more rectilinear appearance. It is only available in polished chrome, whereas the Tubular offers polished chrome, satin chrome, and Onyx matte. The Flat Bar does not offer armpads; the Tubular does. Both share the same cantilevered construction logic and the same overall height of 79 cm.
The Brno is a cantilever design — the entire structure is resolved by the spring tension of the continuous steel frame, which curves from the front floor contact point up into the seat support and then as uprights to the back. This gives the seat a slight, passive flex with the sitter's weight — a quality that a rigid four-legged chair cannot offer. The floating appearance and the live comfort of the seat are inseparable from the same structural logic.
Yes — a thicker seatpad option is available for added comfort, particularly for extended seated use. Specify at time of order. The standard variable-density foam cushion is true to Mies' original design profile; the thicker option adds comfort while retaining the chair's characteristic silhouette.
Yes — the Brno Flat Bar has been in continuous contract specification since its reintroduction in 1958, across restaurant, hospitality, corporate, and institutional settings worldwide. Foam meeting BS 5852 fire resistance requirements is available upon request. Knoll publishes environmental databases for all seating products to support LEED credit documentation on qualifying projects.
Each authentic Brno Flat Bar Chair carries the KnollStudio logo and the signature of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe stamped into the base of the frame.
