Highly coveted in the vintage market for decades, the Florence Knoll Model 33 Sofa is back in production from Knoll, true to the designer's original 1954 specifications. The Model 33 is the sofa-length expression of the same design language as the Model 31 Lounge Chair: a slim tubular steel frame — available in polished chrome or black paint — supporting thick, rectangular seat and back cushions on a multilayer wood panel base with elastic spring suspension and flexible polyurethane padding.

The Model 33 Sofa is structurally distinct from the iconic tufted Florence Knoll sofas. Rather than utilising a heavy-gauge perimeter base beneath a tufted grid, it inherits the lightweight design language of the Model 31 Lounge Chair. By running a continuous, un-tufted multi-density cushion package across a slender tubular steel skeleton, it balances substantial postural support with an effortless contemporary posture that remains intensely relevant nearly seventy years after its debut.

About Florence Knoll (1954)
Educated under masters Eero Saarinen and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Florence Knoll turned interior planning into an architectural science. As head of the legendary Knoll Planning Unit, she established the doctrine of "total design"—coordinating structural architecture, built furniture, custom textiles, and graphics as one fluid discipline. Her mid-century seating collections remain iconic benchmarks within modern design archives worldwide. Knoll is a founding member of the MillerKnoll collective.

Care Instructions

Polished Chrome Frame: Clean periodically using a soft, slightly damp cloth. Follow with an immediate dry cloth pass to avert moisture tarnishing. Do not apply abrasive powders, scouring sponges, or strong chemical solvents.

Black Paint Frame: Use a non-abrasive damp cloth with a mild soap mix if required. Wipe completely dry. Avoid rough surfaces or scourers that might slice down into the protective paint layers.

Fabric Upholstery: Run a regular soft vacuum brush attachment across the cushion faces to lift ambient dust particles. Treat liquid spills immediately by blotting gently from the edges inward; never rub standard textiles aggressively.

Leather Material: Wipe with a dry microfiber cloth weekly. Treat deeper marks with specific, pH-balanced leather cleaning agents and condition as required. Steer clear of household kitchen detergents and alcohol formulas.

They are different designs from the same 1954 collection. The Florence Knoll Sofa, Three Seater (90.5"W) has an exposed heavy-gauge chrome frame and a tufted cushion grid with welted edges. The Model 33 (70.75"W) has a slimmer tubular steel frame and thick rectilinear cushions built on a multilayer wood panel with elastic springs — the same cushion construction as the Model 31 Lounge Chair. The Model 33 is narrower and has a different cushion silhouette.
