In 1926 a meeting of the Werkbund took place at which Mart Stam described his idea for a continuous loop of steel with a cantilevered seat — a chair without back legs. Mies van der Rohe is remembered as the one who made that idea beautiful. His MR Lounge Chair takes the structural concept and resolves it with an awareness of proportion and material finish that distinguishes it from every other cantilevered steel chair of the era. The frame is seamless — no visible welds, no mechanical interruptions — and the polished chrome surface is finished to a standard that reflects Mies' architectural insistence on material precision. The channel-tufted leather cushion, crafted in quilted sections and attached with leather straps dyed to match, completes the object: the softness of the material is calibrated, not excessive. Mies wrote: "Form is not the aim of our work. It is the result." The MR Lounge Chair is that result — a chair whose form is an inevitable consequence of understanding the material.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886–1969) trained in his father's stonemasonry business in Aachen before studying architecture in Berlin. He worked first in the studio of Bruno Paul and then, alongside Le Corbusier and Walter Gropius, in Peter Behrens' office. He became Director of the Bauhaus in 1930, immigrated to the United States in 1938, and established a practice in Chicago where he also became Director of Architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology. His buildings — the Seagram Building, the IIT Campus, the Farnsworth House — changed the face of American architecture. He was a close friend and trusted mentor to Florence Knoll. In 1948, Mies granted Knoll exclusive production rights to the MR Collection and all his furniture. Knoll is part of the MillerKnoll collective.

Component Care Guidelines

Seamless Tubular Steel Frame (Polished Chrome)

Wipe with a clean, slightly damp soft cloth for routine cleaning. For marks, a mild soap solution on a soft cloth is safe — dry immediately and completely. Do not leave standing moisture on chrome; sustained moisture promotes tarnishing over time. Do not use abrasive pads, scouring products, or solvent-based cleaners, which will permanently damage the chrome plating. Treat any scratches or chips promptly to prevent corrosion at exposed bare steel.

Leather Cushion (Acqua / Sabrina / Volo)

Wipe with a dry or very lightly damp soft cloth for routine cleaning. For marks, use a dedicated leather cleaner applied with a soft cloth — work gently, do not rub aggressively. Do not use household detergents, alcohol-based products, or solvents on any leather grade. Condition the leather periodically with a suitable leather conditioner to maintain suppleness and surface integrity. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, which will dry and fade leather over time.

Leather Straps & Floor Glides

The leather straps that attach and support the cushion are finished to match the cushion colour. Clean and condition them as you would the cushion. Inspect straps periodically for wear; contact our team if strap replacement is required. Check plastic floor glides periodically for wear. Replace if worn to prevent floor scratching.

Бесшовная стальная рама (Полированный хром)

Для регулярного ухода протирайте чистой, слегка влажной мягкой тканью. Для удаления следов рук и загрязнений используйте мягкий мыльный раствор, после чего сразу же вытирайте поверхность насухо. MR Lounge Chair's seat is cantilevered — the frame loops continuously from the back legs forward under the seat, with no front legs to anchor the front of the seat. This creates a gentle, natural flex when the sitter moves or shifts weight. The bounce is not adjustable or mechanical — it is an inherent property of the cantilever structure.

The leather cushion is supported and attached by leather straps that pass through or around the tubular steel frame. The straps are sandwiched to belting thickness on front and back and have their edges dyed to match the specified leather colour — they are a visible design element, not a hidden fastening.
