The arms change the chair. They do not change the structure — the MR Armchair is the same seamless cantilevered steel loop as the armless version, with the tube extended and curved to form the arm. But they change the experience of the chair completely. Without arms, the MR Lounge Chair is open — you enter and exit it easily, it can be placed closer to other furniture, and it reads as lighter in a room. With arms, the chair encloses the sitter in a way that the armless version cannot. The 23" arm height — measured from the floor — provides a resting surface that makes extended sitting genuinely comfortable. The chair becomes a place rather than simply a seat. At 25.5" wide it occupies more floor space than the armless but remains compact relative to most lounge chairs of its seating capacity. The 32 lb weight reflects the increased steel in the arm frame. Comes fully assembled, no on-site assembly required.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886–1969) was one of the defining architects of the 20th century. Regarded as one of the most important figures in the history of architecture, he brought a less-is-more approach to everything he designed, from furniture to skyscrapers. Appointed Director of the Bauhaus in 1930, he brought an uncompromising discipline to everything he designed. The MR Collection — created in 1927 — represents his earliest work in tubular steel and his first application of the cantilever principle to furniture. The collection includes the MR Chair, MR Armchair, MR Lounge Chair, MR Chaise Lounge, MR Adjustable Chaise Lounge, and MR Table. Knoll is part of the MillerKnoll collective, alongside Herman Miller, NaughtOne, and other leading design brands.

Component Care Guidelines

Polished Chrome Frame & Integrated Arms

Wipe with a clean, slightly damp microfiber cloth for routine cleaning. For marks, a mild soap solution on a soft cloth is safe on the polished chrome finish. Dry immediately — do not allow water to stand on the frame surface. Do not use abrasive pads, scouring products, or acidic cleaners, which will permanently damage the chrome. The integrated chrome arms should be cared for in the same way as the frame. Inspect periodically for chips or scratches; treat promptly to prevent corrosion on the underlying steel.

Leather Straps

Straps are sandwiched to heavy belting thickness with dyed edges matching your specified color. Wipe down with a dry, clean cloth to remove settling dust. Avoid exposure to damp environments or localized heavy wet cleaning.

Plastic Floor Glides

Snap-in glides require no maintenance. If a glide is lost or damaged, please contact customer support for official replacements. Glides protect hard floor surfaces — do not use the chair on hard floors without glides in place.

Wipe spills immediately with a clean, dry cloth. For routine cleaning, use a barely damp cloth and allow to dry naturally — avoid saturation. Do not use household cleaners, silicone-based products, or solvent-based treatments.

The arms are an integral part of the continuous seamless tubular steel frame — they are not attached or welded separately. The same tube that forms the legs and the seat support curves upward and forward to form the arm. There is no joint, no separate element, no visible connection point.

The low seat height is intentional and characteristic of the MR Collection's lounge chair scale. At 15.75" the sitter is in a settled, relaxed position — the chair is not designed for task or dining use. The cantilevered bounce of the frame amplifies this relaxed quality. If a higher seat height is needed for a dining or task context, consider a different product — contact our team.
