The origins of the bent-steel cantilevered chair are somewhat murky, but generally three names come up in the discussion. Marcel Breuer is widely credited with pioneering the exploration of the material, Mart Stam seems to be the first to conceive a "chair without back legs", and Mies van der Rohe is remembered as the one who made it beautiful. It is believed that Mart Stam described his idea — a continuous loop of steel with a cantilevered seat — at a meeting of the Werkbund in 1926. In attendance were Marcel Breuer and Mies van der Rohe, both of whom were inspired to design cantilever chairs of their own in the coming months. Mies replaced the right angles on the front legs with a graceful curve, which had the advantage of increasing elasticity while preventing material fatigue. He first showed the MR Chair (MR 10) and MR Armchair (MR 20) at the Stuttgart Weissenhof Estate in 1927 — a seminal Werkbund exhibition that first brought modernist works to the public. Over the next five years, Mies developed an entire series of tubular steel designs now presented by Knoll as the MR Collection. In 1948, Mies granted Knoll exclusive rights to produce his furniture, including the MR Series. The chair with arms was reintroduced by Knoll in 2018 with a rattan seat, expanding the collection. The KnollStudio logo and his signature are stamped into the frame of every piece produced.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886–1969) was one of the defining architects of the 20th century. Regarded as one of the most important figures in the history of architecture, he brought a less-is-more approach to everything he designed, from furniture to skyscrapers. Appointed Director of the Bauhaus in 1930, he brought an uncompromising discipline to everything he designed. The MR Collection — created in 1927 — represents his earliest work in tubular steel and his first application of the cantilever principle to furniture. The collection includes the MR Chair, MR Armchair, MR Lounge Chair, MR Chaise Lounge, MR Adjustable Chaise Lounge, and MR Table. Knoll is part of the MillerKnoll collective, alongside Herman Miller, NaughtOne, and other leading design brands.

Care Instructions

Polished Chrome Steel Frame & Arms

Wipe with a clean, slightly damp microfiber cloth for routine cleaning. For marks, a mild soap solution on a soft cloth is safe on the polished chrome finish. Dry immediately — do not allow water to stand on the frame surface. Do not use abrasive pads, scouring products, or acidic cleaners, which will permanently damage the chrome. Inspect periodically for chips or scratches; treat promptly to prevent corrosion on the underlying steel.

Ultra-Matte Powder-Coated Frame & Arms

Wipe with a clean, dry or barely damp cloth. Avoid abrasive or solvent-based cleaners, which will damage the matte finish. Do not use chrome-specific polishes on powder-coated frames. Inspect periodically for chips; treat promptly to protect the underlying steel.

Rattan Seat Maintenance

The rattan seat is protected with a clear lacquer finish. Wipe with a clean, damp cloth to remove dust and surface marks. Treat every three months with a water and glycerin solution to prevent the rattan from drying and cracking. Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight to prevent fading and brittleness. Do not soak or submerge. Contact your officedesign.kz representative if individual rattan strands become damaged or detached.

Plastic Glides

Snap-in glides require no maintenance. If a glide is lost or damaged, contact your officedesign.kz representative for replacements. Glides protect hard floor surfaces — do not use the chair on hard floors without glides in place.

Уход за сиденьем из ротанга

Раз в три месяца обязательно обрабатывайте ротанг специальным раствором воды и глицерина, чтобы предотвратить пересыхание, хрупкость и растрескивание волокон.
