The MR Adjustable Chaise Lounge is one of the earliest expressions of tubular steel furniture ever produced. Mies designed it in 1927, the same year he was appointed artistic director of the Deutscher Werkbund's Weissenhof-Siedlung exhibition in Stuttgart — an event that became a landmark of modernist design. Influenced by Marcel Breuer's earlier experiments with tubular steel at the Bauhaus, Mies saw in the material a structural and aesthetic possibility that the furniture of his time had not yet realised: a chair with no rear legs, whose continuity of form — from floor to back — was a single unbroken curve of chrome-polished steel. The result flexes slightly under the sitter's weight, as the 19th-century iron rockers that inspired it did, but through a completely new material logic. The two-piece frame introduces a hook-and-knob adjustment system behind the backrest, allowing the height and recline angle to be set between 68 and 90 cm — a practical extension of the original design intent that does not compromise the purity of the form. The cushions are suspended on 15 leather belting straps, quilted and seamed in sections, attached to the frame via leather strips and snap buttons — a construction as precise and deliberate as the frame itself. Knoll is the only authorised and licensed manufacturer of the Mies van der Rohe collection; his signature is stamped into the frame of every piece produced.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886–1969) was one of the defining architects of the 20th century. Appointed Director of the Bauhaus in 1930, he brought an uncompromising discipline to everything he designed. The MR Collection — created in 1927 — represents his earliest work in tubular steel and his first application of the cantilever principle to furniture. The collection includes the MR Chair, MR Lounge Chair, MR Chaise Lounge, and MR Adjustable Chaise Lounge. Knoll is part of the MillerKnoll collective, alongside Herman Miller, NaughtOne, and other leading design brands.

Care instructions

Polished chrome steel frame

Wipe with a clean, slightly damp microfiber cloth for routine cleaning. For marks, a mild soap solution on a soft cloth is safe on the polished chrome finish. Dry immediately — do not allow water to stand on the frame surface. Do not use abrasive pads, scouring products, or acidic cleaners, which will permanently damage the chrome. Inspect the hook-and-knob adjustment system periodically; contact your officedesign.kz representative if any part of the mechanism shows signs of wear. Inspect periodically for chips or scratches; treat promptly to prevent corrosion on the underlying steel.

Spinneybeck leather upholstery & straps

Wipe spills immediately with a clean, dry cloth. For routine cleaning, use a barely damp cloth and allow to dry naturally — avoid saturation. Apply a quality leather conditioner periodically to maintain suppleness and prevent cracking. The leather straps and cushion attachment strips should be inspected periodically — consult your officedesign.kz representative if any strap shows signs of wear or loosening. Keep out of direct sunlight to prevent fading. Do not use household cleaners, silicone-based products, or solvent-based treatments. Consult Spinneybeck's specific care guidance for the leather grade specified.

Knoll Textiles upholstery

Most Knoll Textiles carry a W or WS cleaning code — clean with a mild water-based solution and a soft cloth. Blot spills immediately; do not rub. For persistent marks, consult the fabric's specific cleaning code. Dry cleaning solvents should only be used on S or WS designated fabrics. Test any cleaner on an inconspicuous area first. Vacuum periodically to remove dust and maintain surface appearance.

Plastic glides (included)

Snap-in glides require no maintenance. If a glide is lost or damaged, contact your officedesign.kz representative for replacements. Glides protect hard floor surfaces — do not use the chair on hard floors without glides in place.

The MR Adjustable Chaise Lounge (65 × 179 × 68–90 cm) is longer, lower, and features a series of hooks behind the backrest that allow the height and recline angle to be adjusted. The Adjustable version contains 15 belting support straps; the standard Chaise contains 12. Both use the same seamless polished chrome tubular steel frame construction and the same Spinneybeck leather upholstery system.

No — the MR Adjustable Chaise Lounge is an armless design. If you require an arm option, please consider the MR Chaise Lounge, which is available with or without arms.

No — the cushion is suspended on 15 leather belting straps, sandwiched to belting thickness on both front and back with the sides stained to match the leather selection. The cushion sections are attached to the frame via leather strips that wrap around the straps and are secured with snap buttons. This construction is integral to the design and gives the seat its characteristic supported-yet-suspended quality.
