The seat takes the full weight of the sitter — foam cushioning over molded plywood provides comfort where the body needs it most. The cane back serves a different function: it supports without constricting, breathes, and retains the visual lightness that Marcel Breuer specifically sought when designing the Cesca. The hybrid construction maximises both comfort and the original aesthetic.
The Cesca Caned versions have woven cane at both seat and back — traditional but firmer at the seat. The fully upholstered versions have foam cushioning at both seat and back — maximum softness but no cane. The Upholstered Seat & Cane Back combines the padded seat of the upholstered version with the cane back of the caned version — the most material-varied and arguably the most versatile configuration in the Cesca family.
