The Cesca has no back legs — the tubular steel frame forms a continuous loop from the front legs under the seat and up to support the back, held in position by the tension of the sitter's weight. This is the cantilevered form: the chair is self-supporting through the structural tension of the steel loop alone. The result is a natural, slight flex in the seat and back when the sitter moves — this is a designed property of the cantilever, not a defect.
The cane insets are machine-woven natural cane set into a solid hardwood beech frame. The beech frame has a clear lacquer finish. The cane provides both the visual lightness and the functional breathability that characterise the Cesca — it is the same traditional woven cane material used in furniture for centuries, paired with the industrial chrome frame.
Yes — the Cesca Caned Armchair (listed separately) has the same cane seat and back with integrated solid beech arms and is 23.5"W × 23.5"D × 31.5"H with a 27"H arm height. Fully upholstered versions (armless and with arms) are also listed separately.
An original 1928 Cesca Chair (B32) is in the Museum of Modern Art's permanent collection in New York. MoMA curator Cara McCarty described the Cesca as among the ten most important chairs of the 20th century for its revolutionary combination of industrial and natural materials and its pioneering cantilevered form — the first time this type of cantilevered steel dining chair entered mass production.
