The three square formats in the Relaxed Bench family — Small, Medium, and Large — all share a distinctly lower height (13¾"H) than the rectangular Stool, Two Seat, and Three Seat formats (16½"H), and that difference in proportion is deliberate. At 13¾"H, the square benches sit closer to coffee-table height than conventional seat height, which is precisely why Knoll describes this collection as usable "as a bench, ottoman, or coffee table" depending on the room. The Small Square, at 37¾" square, is the most compact of the three square sizes — substantial enough to anchor a seating group as a coffee-table substitute, but modest enough to fit rooms where the larger 50½" or 56¾" square versions would be too much. The exposed heavy gauge steel frame, finished in polished or satin chrome, and the tufted, fiberfill-cushioned seat are identical in construction to every other size in the Relaxed Bench family, so a Small Square placed beside a Stool or a Two Seat introduces no inconsistency in material or finish. Florence Knoll's signature and the KnollStudio logo remain stamped into the base frame, regardless of size.

Florence Knoll Bassett (1917–2019) was a pioneering American architect and interior designer who revolutionized modern corporate office design. Studying under master modernist architects including Mies van der Rohe and Eliel Saarinen, she applied structural clarity and architectural rigor to interior spaces through the influential Knoll Planning Unit. Her meticulously proportioned furniture pieces have become iconic, definitive pillars of mid-century modernism.

Care Instructions

Upholstered Seat (Fabric): Brush or vacuum periodically to remove dust. For marks, use a fabric-appropriate cleaner — test in an inconspicuous area first. Do not over-wet the upholstery; blot rather than rub. Follow the care instructions specific to the specified KnollTextiles fabric. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, which will fade fabric upholstery over time.

Upholstered Seat (Leather): Wipe with a dry or very lightly damp soft cloth for routine cleaning. Use a dedicated leather cleaner for marks — apply gently, do not rub aggressively. Condition the leather periodically with a suitable leather conditioner. Do not use household detergents, alcohol-based products, or solvents. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, which will dry and fade leather over time.

Exposed Steel Frame (Polished or Satin Chrome): Wipe with a clean, slightly damp soft cloth for routine cleaning. Mild soap solution on a soft cloth is safe for marks — dry immediately. Do not leave standing moisture on chrome. Do not use abrasive pads, scouring products, or solvent-based cleaners.
