Designed to furnish the new interiors of postwar America, the Florence Knoll End Table is a scaled-down translation of the lines, gestures, and materials of modern architecture into a piece of occasional furniture. The 35" x 35" size is the larger of two square end tables in the collection: a welded steel tube frame in a polished chrome finish, topped in your choice of polished glass, solid Arabescato or Calacatta marble, or a range of wood veneer finishes including ebonized walnut, light oak, and light walnut. Consistent with every design in the Florence Knoll Collection, the table has a spare, geometric presence that reflects the rational design approach Florence Knoll learned directly from her mentor, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.

Florence Knoll designed a series of end tables specifically to extend the discipline of modern architecture into every corner of the American office and, eventually, the American home. As skyscrapers rose across the country during the postwar boom, she saw it as her task to translate the vocabulary of the modern exterior into interior furnishings — and unlike the sculptural work of her contemporaries Eero Saarinen and Harry Bertoia, her designs were architectural in foundation, not sculptural. The 35" end table is that philosophy in its simplest form: a welded steel tube frame, reduced to a perfect square in plan and finished in polished chrome, supporting a top in whichever material — glass, marble, or wood veneer — best resolves against the room it sits in. Nothing about the base competes with the top; nothing about the top competes with the room. Florence Knoll's own signature is stamped into the base of every table, marking it as part of the collection she developed while directing the Knoll Planning Unit — the division responsible for the interiors of IBM, General Motors, and CBS.

Florence Knoll Bassett (1917–2019) was a pioneering American architect, interior designer, and entrepreneur who fundamentally shaped post-war corporate and residential environments. Studying under modernist masters such as Mies van der Rohe, Eliel Saarinen, and Walter Gropius, she brought a rigorous architectural discipline to furniture engineering. As the head of the legendary Knoll Planning Unit, she revolutionized the modern office landscape through total interior integration. Her own furniture contributions—which she modestly referred to as the "meat and potatoes" fill-in pieces of the Knoll catalog—scaled down architectural logic into immaculate structural geometries. Her enduring body of work has earned international acclaim, including the National Medal of Arts, the American Institute of Architects Allied Professions Medal, and permanent inclusion in the world's premier museum collections. Knoll is part of the MillerKnoll collective.

Care Instructions

Polished Chrome Base: Wipe with a clean, slightly damp soft cloth for routine cleaning. A mild soap solution on a soft cloth is safe for stubborn marks — dry immediately. Do not leave standing moisture on chrome. Do not use abrasive pads, scouring products, or solvent-based cleaners, which will permanently damage the chrome finish.

Glass Top: Clean with a standard premium glass cleaner and a soft, lint-free microfiber cloth. Avoid abrasive pads, which can scratch the polished surface.

Marble Top (if specified): Wipe with a damp cloth; mild soap solution is safe. Do not use acid-based cleaners (vinegar, citrus), which will damage coated marble finishes. Do not use marble tops outdoors. The protective coating may yellow slightly over time, giving the marble a warmer tone — an inherent characteristic of the vintage stone protection, not a product defect.

Wood Veneer Top (if specified): Wipe with a slightly damp soft cloth. Do not leave standing moisture on the surface — dry completely immediately. Do not use solvent-based polishes or treatments on veneer finishes.

Nylon Floor Glides: Check periodically for wear. Replace if worn down to prevent floor scratching. Contact our support team for genuine replacement parts.
