Florence Knoll never considered herself a furniture designer. As head of the Knoll Planning Unit, she approached every object with the larger room in mind — how a table, a chair, a credenza fit into the whole space, the floor, the building. The Dining Table at 78" x 35" embodies that discipline exactly. The base is reduced to its structural essentials: solid steel bar legs, horizontal tube rails, and the connectors that join them, all in a single polished chrome finish with no ornamentation. What is not visible is just as considered — the 78" and 94" tables in this family carry a hidden tension rod substructure, four steel rods converging into a chrome box at the center of the frame, engineered solely to keep a five-foot span of solid marble from ever deflecting. The result is a table that looks effortless because every structural problem was solved before the design was finished. Florence Knoll's own signature and the KnollStudio logo are stamped into the base of every table — proof of authentic Knoll manufacture on a design that won the American Institute of Interior Designers First Award in 1954 and remains, seventy years later, one of the defining tables of American modernism.

Florence Knoll (born Florence Schust, 1917–2019) was trained as an architect at the Cranbrook Academy of Art, the Architectural Association in London, and the Illinois Institute of Technology, where she studied under Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. She counted Walter Gropius, Marcel Breuer, and Mies van der Rohe among her close friends and mentors. In 1941 she met Hans Knoll; the pair married in 1946 and built Knoll Associates into the defining arbiter of modern American design. As founder and director of the Knoll Planning Unit, Florence Knoll pioneered comprehensive interior space planning for corporate America — surveying each client's needs, hierarchies, and patterns of use before delivering a fully resolved architectural interior. Her clients included IBM, General Motors, and CBS. After Hans Knoll's death in 1955, she led the company as president until 1960, then continued directing design until her retirement in 1965. She received the National Endowment for the Arts' National Medal of Arts in 2002. Knoll is the exclusive manufacturer of her furniture designs and is part of the MillerKnoll collective.

Care Instructions

Solid Marble Top (Coated): Wipe with a clean, slightly damp soft cloth for daily care. A mild soap solution is perfectly safe for minor marks — dry immediately and completely. Do not use acid-based cleaners (such as vinegar, citrus, or standard abrasive bathroom products), which will permanently damage the protective transparent polyester coating. Do not place the table outdoors under any circumstances; this specialized coating is not suitable for outdoor climate exposure. Note that the polyester layer may yellow slightly over time, lending the marble a warmer tone; this is an inherent aging characteristic of the protective formula and is not classified as a product defect. Always avoid placing high-temperature items directly onto the stone surface.

Polished Chrome Base: Wipe with a clean, soft, slightly damp cloth for routine cleaning operations. For sticky residues or marks, a mild soap solution applied with a clean microfiber cloth is safe — dry immediately. Never leave standing moisture or liquid lines on the chrome surface; sustained moisture promotes oxidation and tarnishing over time. Do not utilize abrasive pads, steel wool, scouring products, or aggressive solvent-based cleaners, which will irrevocably scratch or pit the mirror-polished chrome finish.
