Harry Bertoia approached the chair the way he approached sculpture — not from a brief, but from an intuition about material. "I went around and discovered, quite soon, that I was not the man to do research," he later explained. "My feeling was that had to come from an inward direction... I came into rod or wire, whether bent or straight. I seemed to find myself at home." The Side Chair was the first form to emerge from that process — a single welded lattice of steel rods that creates a seat and back from nothing but crossed lines in space. The effect, viewed from across a room, is genuinely architectural: the chair reads as drawing rather than object, its mass nearly zero, its presence entirely a function of how light moves through the grid. Sat in, the experience is different again — the lattice flexes very slightly under the body's weight, spreading pressure across dozens of intersection points rather than the few contact points a solid seat would provide. This is the reason the unpadded Side Chair remains genuinely usable for dining and desk work nearly seventy-five years after its introduction: the engineering of the grid does the work that foam padding does in conventional chairs. Florence Knoll, who studied alongside Bertoia at Cranbrook, recognised the significance of what he had made immediately. The chair has been in continuous worldwide production since.

✦ Designed by Harry Bertoia, 1952

Harry Bertoia (1915–1978) was born in San Lorenzo, Italy, and immigrated to Detroit at age 15. He studied at the Detroit Technical High School, the Detroit School of Arts and Crafts, and Cranbrook Academy of Art, where he later taught metalcraft and jewelry design and formed close friendships with Eero Saarinen, Charles and Ray Eames, and Florence Schust (later Florence Knoll). In 1943 he moved to California to help the Eameses develop their molded plywood furniture techniques. Florence and Hans Knoll later persuaded him to relocate east and set up an independent metal workshop within Knoll's production facility, giving him complete creative freedom. The resulting wire chair collection, introduced in 1952, became one of the most recognized achievements of twentieth-century design. Royalties from the collection allowed Bertoia to dedicate the rest of his career to large-scale metal sculpture, including commissions for the General Motors Technical Center and the MIT Chapel altar. His honors include the AIA Gold Medal and Designer of the Year, USA, 1955. Knoll is part of the MillerKnoll collective.

Care Instructions

Polished & Satin Chrome Frame: Wipe with a clean, slightly damp soft cloth for routine maintenance. For stubborn marks, a mild soap solution is safe—dry immediately and completely to prevent moisture damage. Avoid abrasive pads, scouring products, or solvents, which permanently degrade the plating. Because of the open wire grid, dust can build up at rod intersections; a soft brush or compressed air is highly effective.

Powder Coat Frame: Clean using a soft, damp cloth and mild soap. While powder-coating is highly scratch-resistant compared to chrome, avoid abrasive materials to maintain its smooth uniform color texture.

Fabric Pads: Vacuum or brush periodically. Clean stains using a fabric-appropriate agent—always test on an inconspicuous spot first. Blot carefully; do not rub. Avoid prolonged direct exposure to intense sunlight.

Leather Pads: Dust regularly with a dry cloth. Use specialized leather cleaners and condition periodically with a high-quality leather cream. Do not use household detergents, alcohols, or strong solvents.

Текстильные подушки: Регулярно чистите пылесосом или щеткой. Для удаления пятен используйте специализированные средства для деликатных тканей, предварительно протестировав их на незаметном участке. Промакивайте, но не трите. Берегите от длительного воздействия прямых солнечных лучей.

Кожаные подушки: Протирайте сухой или едва влажной тканью. Используйте только специализированные составы для натуральной кожи и периодически обрабатывайте кондиционером. Исключите бытовые моющие средства, спирты и растворители.

Yes — the welded steel lattice is engineered to flex slightly under the sitter's weight, distributing pressure across the grid rather than concentrating it at a few points. Many customers use the chair bare, particularly for dining use. A seat pad adds a layer of cushioned comfort and a contrasting colour, secured with domed metal lock-snaps that allow easy removal for cleaning or seasonal changes.

The seat pad version leaves the wire lattice visible around a contoured cushion that sits within the seat basket. The Full Cover version (listed separately) stretches a complete upholstered cover over the entire wire basket, fully concealing the lattice in a single continuous upholstered form.

The powder-coat finish (not chrome) is suitable for outdoor use.
