The standard Molded Shell Side Chair and the legendary Bertoia Side Chair both leverage a classic sled-base leg architecture inherited directly from Bertoia's seminal 1952 collection — an elegant structural layout, but one fundamentally not engineered for dense vertical stacking. This specialized Stacking configuration addresses a critical functional requirement in modern architecture: high-end corporate or institutional spaces that demand authentic, design-forward seating in highly fluid quantities, easily brought out for key assemblies and then stowed efficiently. The purpose-built structural base allows up to five chairs to stack cleanly on top of one another directly on the floor. An integrated clear thermoplastic elastomer bumper sits between the steel frame and the nylon shell of each nested chair, ensuring the vertical stack remains perfectly stable while completely isolating the surfaces to prevent any scratching or marking of the unit beneath. At an agile 14 lbs, individual chairs are light enough to be managed and re-stacked quickly by a single facility technician. The shell itself — molded from glass-fibre reinforced nylon composite and offered in the exact curated color selection as the standard Molded Shell Side Chair — remains visually unchanged; only the underlying base lines have been intelligently adapted to master the stacking dilemma. The final execution extends Bertoia’s timeless design language into demanding commercial environments that the original 1952 and 1960 models were never structurally configured to handle.

Harry Bertoia (1915–1978) was born in San Lorenzo, Italy, and immigrated to Detroit at age 15. He studied at the Detroit Technical High School, the Detroit School of Arts and Crafts, and Cranbrook Academy of Art, where he later taught metalcraft and jewelry design and formed close friendships with Eero Saarinen, Charles and Ray Eames, and Florence Schust (later Florence Knoll). In 1943 he moved to California to help the Eameses develop their molded plywood furniture techniques — a contribution that has historically received little public credit. Florence and Hans Knoll later persuaded him to relocate east and set up an independent metal workshop within Knoll's production facility, giving him complete creative freedom. The resulting wire chair collection, introduced in 1952, became one of the most recognized achievements of twentieth-century design. Royalties from the collection allowed Bertoia to dedicate the rest of his career to large-scale metal sculpture, including commissions for the General Motors Technical Center and the MIT Chapel altar. His honors include the AIA Gold Medal and Designer of the Year, USA, 1955. Knoll is part of the MillerKnoll collective.

Care Instructions

Welded Steel Stacking Base (Chrome or Powder Coat): Dust frequently using a clean, soft dry cloth. To clear standard smudges or grime, wipe with a damp cloth and a mild, non-abrasive liquid soap mixture; polish immediately with a dry cloth. Never employ stiff abrasive wire pads or industrial acid-based solvents on the polished plating or powder coat finish layers.

Molded Fiber-Reinforced Shell: Wipe clean using a soft, damp cloth. For stubborn scuffs or marks, a diluted mild household detergent solution is entirely safe. Avoid abrasive cleaning sponges, steel wool, or harsh petroleum-based solvent chemicals that could damage the matte texture of the nylon surface.

Thermoplastic Stacking Bumpers: The clear thermoplastic elastomer buffer pads are engineered for long-term commercial wear and require no specialized ongoing maintenance under normal use. Гарри Бертойя (1915–1978) родился в Сан-Лоренцо, Италия, и в возрасте 15 лет иммигрировал в Детройт.
