The Diamond Chair earned its name from its geometry: viewed from above, the seat and back resolve into a faceted diamond shape, the welded rods meeting at angles rather than curves. This faceting is not a decorative choice — it is the most efficient way welded steel rod naturally distributes tension across a three-dimensional basket form, and Bertoia, working by intuition rather than calculation, arrived at the geometry that the material itself wanted to take. "I began to rely once more on my own body," he said of the design process. "I began to think in terms of what I would like as a chair." The result is a chair that holds the sitter in a deep recline, the back curving up and over to support the shoulders, the wide seat basket allowing a casual, settled posture that a dining chair cannot provide. Bertoia patented the design — an unusual step for a furniture object, and a signal of how distinct the form was from anything that preceded it. The chair was honoured internationally within a decade: Designer of the Year in the United States in 1955, a Certificate of Merit from the American Institute of Architects, and the Design Center Stuttgart Award in Germany in 1962. The 18-karat gold-plated version, introduced for the centenary of Bertoia's birth, applies a material that Bertoia himself favoured in his large-scale sculptural work — closing a loop between his furniture and his fine art practice that few other Knoll designs can claim.

Harry Bertoia (1915–1978) was born in San Lorenzo, Italy, and immigrated to Detroit at age 15. He studied at the Detroit Technical High School, the Detroit School of Arts and Crafts, and Cranbrook Academy of Art, where he later taught metalcraft and jewellery design and formed close friendships with Eero Saarinen, Charles and Ray Eames, and Florence Schust (later Florence Knoll). In 1943 he moved to California to help the Eameses develop their now-famous moulded plywood furniture techniques — a contribution that has historically received little public credit. Florence and Hans Knoll later persuaded him to relocate east and set up an independent metal workshop within Knoll's production facility, giving him complete creative freedom with no design brief. The result, introduced in 1952, was his now-iconic wire chair collection — the only furniture series Bertoia ever designed, and one of the most recognised achievements in twentieth-century furniture design. Royalties from the collection allowed Bertoia to dedicate the rest of his career to large-scale metal sculpture; Eero Saarinen commissioned him to create a sculptural metal screen for the General Motors Technical Center, and he designed the altar for the MIT Chapel, also designed by Saarinen. His honours include the AIA Gold Medal and Designer of the Year, USA, 1955. Knoll is part of the MillerKnoll collective.

Care Instructions

Chrome Frames (Polished/Satin): Wipe with a clean, slightly damp soft cloth. Remove marks using a mild soap solution and dry completely immediately. Never leave standing moisture. Do not use abrasive pads or solvent-based cleaner formulas. Clear out rod intersections easily using a soft brush or compressed air.

Rilsan Finish Frame: Rilsan is a highly resilient, chip- and chemical-resistant bonded nylon layer. Clean with a damp cloth and mild soap. Safely engineered for long-term outdoor use under routine periodic maintenance.

18K Gold Plated Frame: Protected by a delicate clear topcoat lacquer. Wipe exclusively with a very lightly damp microfiber cloth. Completely avoid metal polishes, scouring pads, or aggressive solvents which strip away lacquer shielding. Address scratches promptly via our professional service desk.

Seat Cushion Maintenance: Periodically vacuum fabric or wipe leather with specialized cleaners. Treat textiles with appropriate dry-blot methods, avoiding intense rubbing or deep chemical household solvents.
