The Full Cover treatment changes the Diamond Chair's relationship to the room more than any other configuration option in the Bertoia Collection. Where the bare wire chair is fundamentally about transparency — seeing through the form to the space beyond — the Full Cover chair is about presence: a continuous upholstered mass that holds its faceted diamond geometry through fabric or leather tension rather than open steel. The cover is cut and stretched precisely to the contours of the welded basket, then secured with hidden hooks rather than the visible snap fasteners used on the seat-pad configuration — a construction choice that keeps the upholstered surface completely continuous, with no hardware breaking the line of the cover. The choice of cover material determines the chair's final character entirely: a textured Knoll Textile like Hourglass gives the chair a soft, tactile quality; a Spinneybeck leather gives it material seriousness and durability; the outdoor-rated Chain Link olefin, paired with Rilsan-finished rods, extends the fully upholstered Diamond Chair experience outdoors. Every Full Cover Diamond Chair carries the Knoll logo stamped into its base — the same authentication mark as every other configuration in the collection.

✦ Designed by Harry Bertoia, 1952

Harry Bertoia (1915–1978) was born in San Lorenzo, Italy, and immigrated to Detroit at age 15. He studied at the Detroit Technical High School, the Detroit School of Arts and Crafts, and Cranbrook Academy of Art, where he later taught metalcraft and jewelry design and formed close friendships with Eero Saarinen, Charles and Ray Eames, and Florence Schust (later Florence Knoll). In 1943 he moved to California to help the Eameses develop their molded plywood furniture techniques — a contribution that has historically received little public credit. Florence and Hans Knoll later persuaded him to relocate east and set up an independent metal workshop within Knoll's production facility, giving him complete creative freedom. The resulting wire chair collection, introduced in 1952, became one of the most recognized achievements of twentieth-century design. Royalties from the collection allowed Bertoia to dedicate the rest of his career to large-scale metal sculpture, including commissions for the General Motors Technical Center and the MIT Chapel altar. His honors include the AIA Gold Medal and Designer of the Year, USA, 1955. Knoll is part of the MillerKnoll collective.

Care Instructions

Welded Steel Frame: Under normal use conditions, the steel structure remains completely concealed beneath the cover. If exposed during professional recovering, clean the chrome or Rilsan rods using a soft damp cloth and mild liquid soap. Dry immediately with a fresh microfiber towel; avoid abrasive cloths or chemical solvents.

Upholstered Fabric Cover: Brush or vacuum surface dust regularly. Clean localized marks utilizing fabric-specific agents, testing on an inconspicuous hidden section first. Blot moisture away carefully; do not rub aggressively into the weave fibers.

Chain Link / Olefin Cover (Outdoor): Wipe down periodically with a soft cloth and a gentle, diluted soap solution. Olefin fibers are inherently resistant to ambient moisture retention and ultraviolet fading, adapting effortlessly to sustained outdoor usage.

Premium Leather Cover: Wipe routinely with a soft, entirely dry microfibre textile. Treat surface markings with specialized premium leather cleaner formulas. Apply high-quality conditioning cream seasonally. Keep away from dish detergents, rubbing alcohol, or solvents.
