Before Harry Bertoia ever welded a wire rod into the lattice basket that would define his Side Chair, his Diamond Chair, and his Bird Chair, he made this bench. It is, in that sense, the origin point of the entire Bertoia Collection — and although it does not carry the signature wire-mesh seat and back of his later work, the welded wire sled-base beneath the wood slats is an early, direct exploration of the same material logic that would soon produce the most celebrated chairs of his career. Hans and Florence Knoll's characteristic approach — encouraging Bertoia to explore freely rather than work to a brief — produced this bench first, and everything else followed from the confidence it gave him in the material. The Outdoor version substitutes solid teak for the painted wood slats of the indoor bench and offers either stainless steel or a powder-coated zinc-coated steel base, both engineered for sustained exterior exposure. Teak's natural oils provide inherent weather resistance — owners can choose to maintain the wood's golden colour with periodic oiling, or allow it to weather naturally to the silver-grey patina that teak furniture is known for. At 72" long and only 15.25" high, the bench performs two functions in one object — genuine outdoor seating, or a low surface for an outdoor lounge arrangement — making it one of the more versatile pieces in the entire Bertoia Collection.

✦ Designed by Harry Bertoia, 1952

Harry Bertoia (1915–1978) was born in San Lorenzo, Italy, and immigrated to Detroit at age 15. He studied at the Detroit Technical High School, the Detroit School of Arts and Crafts, and Cranbrook Academy of Art, where he later taught metalcraft and jewelry design and formed close friendships with Eero Saarinen, Charles and Ray Eames, and Florence Schust (later Florence Knoll). In 1943 he moved to California to help the Eameses develop their molded plywood furniture techniques — a contribution that has historically received little public credit. Florence and Hans Knoll later persuaded him to relocate east and set up an independent metal workshop within Knoll's production facility, giving him complete creative freedom. The resulting wire chair collection, introduced in 1952, became one of the most recognized achievements of twentieth-century design. Royalties from the collection allowed Bertoia to dedicate the rest of his career to large-scale metal sculpture, including commissions for the General Motors Technical Center and the MIT Chapel altar. His honors include the AIA Gold Medal and Designer of the Year, USA, 1955. Knoll is part of the MillerKnoll collective.

Care Instructions

Solid Teak Slats: Teak contains natural oils that provide inherent weather resistance. To maintain the wood's original golden colour, apply a premium teak oil or sealant periodically (frequency depends on climate and sun exposure — consult our team for guidance specific to your conditions). Left untreated, teak will weather naturally to an attractive silver-grey patina, which many owners prefer and which does not compromise the wood's structural integrity. Clean periodically with a soft brush and mild soap solution; rinse thoroughly. Avoid pressure washing, which can permanently damage the wood grain.

Stainless Steel Base: Wipe with a clean, damp soft cloth. A mild soap solution is completely safe for removing surface marks. Stainless steel is inherently corrosion-resistant; periodic cleaning maintains its polished look in coastal, salty, or high-humidity environments.

Painted (Powder-Coat) Base: Wipe with a clean, damp soft cloth. Use a mild soap solution for marks and dry immediately. Avoid abrasive scrubbers or harsh pads. Inspect periodically for any deep chips that expose the underlying structural steel; contact our team for specialized touch-up guidance.
