The bar and counter stool format places different demands on upholstery than a dining chair — seating time at a counter or bar is often longer and more continuous, and the elevated seat height changes how weight distributes across the seat surface. The Full Cover treatment, stretching a complete fabric or leather surface over the welded wire basket, provides a consistently cushioned surface across the entire seat rather than relying solely on the lattice's natural flex. This makes it a practical choice for settings where guests or family members spend extended periods seated at a counter or bar — hotel lobby bars, home kitchen islands used for long conversations, restaurant counter seating. Available in both Counter Height and Bar Height, the Full Cover stool maintains every proportion of the original 1952 design while changing its material character entirely.

✦ Designed by Harry Bertoia, 1952

Harry Bertoia (1915–1978) was born in San Lorenzo, Italy, and immigrated to Detroit at age 15. He studied at the Detroit Technical High School, the Detroit School of Arts and Crafts, and Cranbrook Academy of Art, where he later taught metalcraft and jewelry design and formed close friendships with Eero Saarinen, Charles and Ray Eames, and Florence Schust (later Florence Knoll). In 1943 he moved to California to help the Eameses develop their molded plywood furniture techniques — a contribution that has historically received little public credit. Florence and Hans Knoll later persuaded him to relocate east and set up an independent metal workshop within Knoll's production facility, giving him complete creative freedom. The resulting wire chair collection, introduced in 1952, became one of the most recognized achievements of twentieth-century design. Royalties from the collection allowed Bertoia to dedicate the rest of his career to large-scale metal sculpture, including commissions for the General Motors Technical Center and the MIT Chapel altar. His honors include the AIA Gold Medal and Designer of the Year, USA, 1955. Knoll is part of the MillerKnoll collective.

Care Instructions

Welded Steel Base — Polished/Satin Chrome: Wipe with a clean, damp soft cloth. A mild soap solution is safe for removing marks; dry immediately. Avoid abrasive pads, metal polishes, or solvent-based cleaners.

Fabric Full Cover: Vacuum or brush periodically to remove dust. For stains, use an appropriate fabric cleaner — test on an inconspicuous spot first. Blot spills immediately with a clean cloth; do not rub aggressively.

Leather Full Cover: Dust regularly with a dry, soft cloth. Clean spills instantly with a clean absorbent cloth. Use specialist leather conditioners or approved cleaning sets only when necessary.
