The Counter Height stool is scaled for kitchen islands. At a 25" seat height, its open lattice keeps a row of stools from visually crowding culinary spaces.

The barstool form presents a specific design challenge that Bertoia's wire-lattice principle solves more elegantly than almost any alternative: height. A solid-seat barstool at counter or bar height reads as visually heavy — a block of material suspended well above the floor. The Bertoia Barstool, built from the same welded steel rod construction as the Side Chair, simply extends the sled-base legs to the required height while keeping the seat and back basket exactly as open and transparent as the dining chair version. The result is a barstool that occupies almost no visual mass even at 43" tall — light enough that a full row of them along a kitchen island does not compress the room the way conventional stools do. The choice between Counter Height and Bar Height is purely a function of the surface the stool will pair with: measure the height of the counter or table the stool will sit at, and select accordingly — 36–39" surfaces call for the Counter Height stool, 40–43" surfaces call for the Bar Height stool. Both heights share identical construction, finish options, and seat configurations; the only variable is the leg extension.

✦ Designed by Harry Bertoia, 1952

Harry Bertoia (1915–1978) was born in San Lorenzo, Italy, and immigrated to Detroit at age 15. He studied at the Detroit Technical High School, the Detroit School of Arts and Crafts, and Cranbrook Academy of Art, where he later taught metalcraft and jewelry design and formed close friendships with Eero Saarinen, Charles and Ray Eames, and Florence Schust (later Florence Knoll). In 1943 he moved to California to help the Eameses develop their now-famous molded plywood furniture techniques — a contribution that has historically received little public credit. Florence and Hans Knoll later persuaded him to relocate east and set up an independent metal workshop within Knoll's production facility, giving him complete creative freedom with no design brief. The result, introduced in 1952, was his now-iconic wire chair collection — the only furniture series Bertoia ever designed, and one of the most recognized achievements in twentieth-century furniture design. Royalties from the collection allowed Bertoia to dedicate the rest of his career to large-scale metal sculpture. His honors include the转 AIA Gold Medal and Designer of the Year, USA, 1955. Knoll is part of the MillerKnoll collective.

Care Instructions

Polished Chrome Frame: Clean regularly using a soft, damp cloth. Use a mild liquid soap solution for marks and dry immediately with a clean microfiber towel. Do not leave pooling moisture. Never use abrasive cleaning pads, steel wool, or strong solvent formulas.

Powder-Coat Frames (Black/White): Wipe down with a clean damp cloth and mild soap. Exceptionally durable against chips and external weather factors. Clear accumulated outdoor debris from wire intersections with compressed air or soft bristle brushes.

Seat Pad (Fabric/Leather): Vacuum fabric covers periodically or wipe leather with dedicated leather cleaners. Always treat stains promptly using a blotting motion; never rub aggressively into the upholstery grain.

Форма барного стула ставит перед дизайнером сложную задачу, которую сетчатый принцип Бертойи решает изящнее, чем любая альтернатива: это высота. Барный стул со сплошным сиденьем на уровне контр-высоты выглядит визуально тяжелым — словно массивный блок материала подвешен высоко над полом. Барный стул Bertoia, созданный из той же конструкции из сварных стальных прутьев, что и стул Side Chair, просто продлевает ножки-полозья до необходимой высоты, оставляя корзину сиденья и спинки точно такой же открытой и прозрачной, как и в обеденной версии. В результате барный стул практически не занимает визуального объема даже при высоте 109 см — он настолько легок, что целый ряд таких стульев вдоль кухонного острова не сжимает пространство комнаты, как это делают обычные громоздкие модели. Выбор между полубарной (Counter) и барной (Bar) высотой зависит исключительно от поверхности, с которой будет сочетаться стул: измерьте высоту стойки или стола и выберите соответствующий вариант — для поверхностей 36–39" требуется полубарный стул, для поверхностей 40–43" необходим барный стул. Оба варианта высоты имеют идентичную конструкцию, варианты отделки и конфигурации сидений; единственной переменной является длина ножек.
