Scaling Platner's wire-rod construction up to 70" in diameter is a considerably more demanding manufacturing challenge than it might first appear — every additional inch of diameter requires additional welded rods, precisely aligned so the curvature remains structurally consistent across the entire base while producing the collection's signature moiré visual effect. At this size, that effect becomes genuinely dramatic: seated at different points around a 70" table, guests experience distinctly different visual readings of the same base, as the layered curved rods interact with the angle of view and available light. The exclusive clear-glass top specification for this size is deliberate — a solid or opaque top at this diameter would obscure far more of the base's sculptural complexity than a smaller table's top would, and Platner's collection is, at its core, about celebrating rather than concealing the structure. ✦ Designed by Warren Platner, 1966

Warren Platner (1919–2006) was born in Baltimore and graduated from Cornell University's School of Architecture in 1941. From 1945 to 1950 he worked for Raymond Loewy and I. M. Pei; from 1960 to 1965 he was part of Eero Saarinen's office, contributing to major projects including Dulles International Airport. In 1967 he founded his own practice, Platner Associates, in Connecticut. As an architect in his own right, Platner designed the Georg Jensen Design Center and the celebrated Windows on the World restaurant atop the World Trade Center, both in New York City — but it was his 1966 furniture collection for Knoll that earned him worldwide renown. Reflecting on his design philosophy, Platner said: "I began to think about what I thought furniture, specifically a chair, really might be, starting with the philosophy that it isn't going to be aggressively technological, or aggressively handicraft." Knoll is part of the MillerKnoll collective.

Care Instructions

Welded Steel Wire Base (Polished Nickel): Wipe with a clean, slightly damp soft cloth for routine maintenance. For minor marks, a mild soap solution on a soft cloth is safe—dry immediately and completely. Do not use abrasive pads, scouring products, or solvent-based cleaners, which will permanently damage the clear lacquer coating and the underlying plating. Because the base is an open radial lattice, dust can accumulate at the weld intersections; a soft brush or compressed air is effective for routine dusting.

Welded Steel Wire Base (Metallic Bronze): Metallic bronze surfaces should be wiped clean with a damp soft cloth and mild soap if needed; avoid all abrasive materials, harsh scrubbing tools, or industrial solvent configurations that can compromise the uniform painted layout.

Exclusive Clear Tempered Glass Top: Clean using a soft microfibre cloth combined with a high-quality standard glass cleaner. Do not use abrasive scrubbing sponges or pads. Given the grand 70" structural span of this glass architectural element, take extra precautions against edge impact stresses to safeguard the tempered assembly from micro-fractures.
