Platner arrived at his wire construction method by asking a question that few furniture designers before him had posed directly: why separate support from the object? Conventional furniture treats structure as something to be hidden or minimized, with decoration applied afterward. Platner's radial wire base does both jobs at once — the welded rods that hold the glass top aloft are also the entirety of the table's visual interest, arranged with a density and curvature calculated to produce a moiré pattern as light passes through the layered rods. Achieving this required Platner to personally develop the production technique used to manufacture the collection — each piece demands over a thousand individual welds joining more than a hundred cylindrical steel rods, a level of manufacturing complexity almost without precedent in furniture production at the time. The result, introduced in 1966, was immediately recognized as a genuine achievement: the Platner Collection entered continuous production and has remained there since, with pieces held in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art. The 60" Dining Table is the size Platner scaled for genuine family and entertaining use — substantial enough for six to eight guests, transparent enough that the glass top never visually competes with the room around it.

Warren Platner (1919–2006) was born in Baltimore and graduated from Cornell University's School of Architecture in 1941. From 1945 to 1950 he worked for Raymond Loewy and I. M. Pei; from 1960 to 1965 he was part of Eero Saarinen's office, contributing to major projects including Dulles International Airport. In 1967 he founded his own practice, Platner Associates, in Connecticut. As an architect in his own right, Platner designed the Georg Jensen Design Center and the celebrated Windows on the World restaurant atop the World Trade Center, both in New York City — but it was his 1966 furniture collection for Knoll that earned him worldwide renown. Reflecting on his design philosophy, Platner said: "I began to think about what I thought furniture, specifically a chair, really might be, starting with the philosophy that it isn't going to be aggressively technological, or aggressively handicraft." Knoll is part of the MillerKnoll collective.

Care Instructions

Welded Steel Wire Base (Polished Nickel): Wipe with a clean, slightly damp soft cloth for routine maintenance. For minor marks, a mild soap solution on a soft cloth is safe—dry immediately and completely. Do not use abrasive pads, scouring products, or solvent-based cleaners, which will permanently damage the clear lacquer coating and the underlying plating. Because the base is an open radial lattice, dust can accumulate at the weld intersections; a soft brush or compressed air is effective for routine dusting.

Welded Steel Wire Base (Metallic Bronze): Wipe clean with a clean, damp soft cloth. A mild soap solution is safe for removing marks—dry immediately. Completely avoid abrasive cleaning products that could wear through the painted finish.

Clear Tempered Glass Top: Clean using a soft cloth combined with standard glass cleaner. Do not use abrasive scrubbing pads. Take careful precautions when placing hard objects on the glass surface; while tempered glass is highly durable, impact on the edge profiles can chip the glass. Avoid placing heavy, concentrated loads at any single point on the surface.

Сварная база из стальных прутьев (Матовая бронза): Протирайте сухой или влажной мягкой тканью. При появлении следов используйте мягкое мыло, незамедлительно вытирая влагу. Избегайте любых абразивных составов, способных истончить или поцарапать нанесенный слой краски.

Столешница из прозрачного закаленного стекла: Протирайте мягкой салфеткой с использованием стандартных бытовых очистителей для стекол. Не используйте абразивные подушечки. Будьте аккуратны при размещении на столе твердых предметов — несмотря на высокую прочность закаленного стекла, сильные удары по кромке могут привести к сколам. Избегайте точечного размещения экстремально тяжелых грузов на стекле.
